There seems to be as many anti virus software applications as there are hedgehogs. Which one to use seems a gamble. Still they are free and most of them are rather good. So hey ho... :?

This more of a comment than a problem etc, but downloaded Google Chrome and everything has speeded up a bit. Not sure if it's just because it was late etc or because it's good.

Anyone else dowloaded it and found it good or am I being too optimistic etc.

Chrome is very very fast. Can't wait for the linux version. It's not 100% stable though, it renders a few things poorly still.

I downloaded a movie (AVI-file) and try to play it in VLC Media Player. It won't. It is streaming but does not show anything. If I am informed correctly this streaming happens when an AVI-file is corrupted or incomplete. Now I want to try to repair it and google shows me dozens of free download repair tools. Can anyone suggest me one that (mostly) works and is safe to use.

Thanks Norseman. Tried that but got "unknown or not supported format". But the movie looks like a normal AVI-file. Guess something wrong with the download. Any other suggestions? A converter maybe? Do not say download again. That took a whole day.

Easiest way is to download a 'clean' version of the file. Once something gets 'corrupted' between the server and the client there isn't much that be done aside from finding a better version of the dld.

Agree with buksi.
If the start of the AVI file is corrupted you have no other choice than to download the damn thing again.
Is the end of it corrupted it's easier to fix.

I suppose you are using some sort of Bit Torrent downloader and the usual problem is some sort of digital mix-up in the beginning of the file.
Some programs may resolve this problem like Avi-fixer or the DVR fixer, but it's also possible to gain access to the AVI file if you convert the AVI to a MPEG, DivX, MOV or SWF file.
Some freeware programs will "correct"/overwrite the errors and let you watch it in another format, like Any Video Converter.

Nope. Does not accept the AVI file.
Tried it with another video repair tool and that told me "this is not an AVI file"
But under properties it clearly says it is.
I think I give up. Thanks for the assistance.

Internet Explorer 8

Post by PET »

I installed this quite recently with XP and it seems to me that I get a lot of difficulty getting onto web pages ( this did not happen before). It often sais '' Internet Explorer cannot display the web page''

I refresh the page and that sometimes works but it happens so often, that I cannot help thinking it has something to do with the new IE 8

I am no computer expert so if you can think of something like going into Properties then please guide step by step.

yep, download this and use it instead: Firefox.

At least that will determine whether its a browser issue or something else.

I have downloaded Firefox but it has disabled my Google tool bar and my HP Smart Web Printing and cannot find anything to work these?

I see the IE Ikon is still available so if I want to print perhaps I have to use that browser each time which seems a nuisance.

PET,
It is possible that you need to reinstall those items as they probably put something in the browser's plug ins folder or similar, so the browser knows to look for them. That is if you installed Firefox after you installed those things.

I see there is a Transfer Wizard to send Favourites etc but will they still remain in Internet Explorer after I press the magic button to send them into Firefox?

Firefox is much faster but also throws up a number of pages it cannot find blaming script issues?
