Karaoke equipment

I made a search in the forum with "Karaoke" and got 50 matches, but none of them was of any help.
My lady wants "Karaoke" as birthday present to use it at the birthday party and other future parties, but I have no idea what you really need. I looked at Lotus and Makro and, as usual, got no help from the staff.
The cheapest solution seems to be a DVD-Player where you can put an external microphone into it and connect it to the TV. Then you need a lot of Karaoke VCD's, I think.
But perhaps you need something more to have a really good equipment with many possibilities, as storing the songs on an internal disc or to reduce the volume of the original singer to a desired level.
Has anyone experience with this. I bet some of your ladies are crazy about karaoke.

I made some research in the neighbourhood, where I can hear Karaoke from time to time:
The most important thing is to have speakers with at least 1000 Watt output, so that the whole village can enjoy the music.
The second important thing when singing is to avoid hitting the right sounds or notes, otherwise nobody would recognize it as karaoke.
The most important thing for me is to buy earplugs together with the karaoke equipment. But with the bass it will not help much. I even doubt if I will get earplugs in Thailand. I wonder what I will get if I try to explain it putting my fingers in the ears.
