This morning watched ManU vs Porto in a 1997 Champions League match (4-0 fyi).
Got me thinking that I remember a keeper back around that time (perhaps for Liverpool), short cut hair, possibly a bit bald in front, who after many good season was disgraced for throwing matches.
Anyone remember his name, and was he indeed with Liverpool? Pete

Bruce Grobbelar (sp). Yes, he was with Liverpool, but went to some other lower club and it was whilst he was there that the accusations started - I think.

He was a Great entertainer and his wild antics on and off the field upset a few people. I watch some of the so called evidence pointed at him and to me it just looked like his normal antics. Outfield players make mistakes all the time but if a keeper makes one it usually results in a goal...what sane person would want to be a keeper
Whilst at Plymouth, I'd rate him as the worst keeper I've seen. His stupid antics, and his inability to recover the situation was worth at least one goal a match to the opposition.
Pete, google 'bruce grobbelaar match fixing' and all will be revealed, other players were involved too, as well as far eastern betting rings and the like.
I read an excellent book about this, which I still have somewhere. Its publication was delayed pending the outcome of grobbelaars appeal - which he won - and was awarded, I believe 1p in compensation, which effectively ruined him, which sums up nicely the judges view on the whole sordid affair and where responsibility lay.
The whistleblower was an Afrikaner mate of Grobbelaars from South Africa who was a bit of a walter mitty character and the 'middleman', I recall.
It really was grubby matter all to do with excessive lifestyles, greed and debt and if he (Grobs) wasn't guilty of an actual deed, its pretty clear he would have gone through with it.

Didn't realise he was at Plymouth. Had I known, I would have chosen my words more carefully.
