Snakes alive!
I am sure youd be pretty pissed off if somene threw petrol on you and set fire to you. It is probably a huge exaggeration that it attacked people, if someone was in the way then its their own daft fault. The thais as a general rule will call every snake a cobra, and kill it. Its a difficult one to kill or simply scare it away, because they are amazing animals but do kill many people, we need a Steve Irwin character in town to rescue us from the snakes! Anyone up for it?

Hi JW
It was a cobra, when we found the snake skin around the front door you could see what it was.
The funny thing was that our tom cat from England was acting very strange at that time, now we know why.
We were told that when they shed skin they rub up against things to loosen the skin, seems my toolbox was just right.
The snake never caught fire just scared it out of the drain.
The Thais washed down the soi as they said the blood was poisonous.
Funny thing is that when i asked what cobra tasted like the reply was no good, but they cook it with loads of chilli to take away the taste.
They also said that if they eat the snake it gives them Power. YUK.
Mike.

Mike.Good to have you on snakes and not females but are you sure King Cobras are native to Thailand,I am uncertain on that point but am seeking veryfication. The strangest thing about a king cobra is that it only eats other snakes and not rodents. In South africa with the growth of population and housing we used to get many Cape cobras and Puff adders into our gardens in Western cape but we had a number to call and a free snake catcher would come and take them away back to the countyside. That is why you are getting more snakes in Hua Hin as the town is rapidly developing and their habitat is being disturbed. We always had this preoblem on oil drilling sites on land as we always set up our portacabins after the bulldosers had levelled out about 10 acres. We used to lay out a 2inch diameter manilla rope as for some reason snakes are uncofortable sliding over rope as it is man made I guess. As to snakes under fridges that is quite normal as they are desperately seeking the heat from the compressor as their bodies require an enormous amount of heat and the sun is not always out in Hua Hin.Digger
They are indeed native to Thailand Digger. You are right that King Cobras prays on other snakes but occasionally the also eat large lizards.Digger wrote: are you sure King Cobras are native to Thailand,I am uncertain on that point but am seeking veryfication. The strangest thing about a king cobra is that it only eats other snakes and not rodents.
King Cobras also inhabits southern China in addition to lomu's posting.
A very impressive snake and I've seen one in Cha Am but that was in a snake show.
Hope I'll never corner one.
I intend to live forever - so far so good.

After speaking to the locals they tell me that the Cobra will eat many small animals, they said that Rats are a favorite but that it is not uncommon for the Cobra to eat other small animals including cats and chickens.
I have to admit i hate snakes but once in Pattaya when i had drunk one over the eight i did have my photo taken with what i think was a python.
I was surprised that we had snakes where i live as i was always told they were up over the hill in Hua Hin towards pala u.
Think i will buy one of those stun guns that they sell in the market and attach it to a long stick.

I saw one killed next door to a friend's bungalow complex in Khao Lak a couple of years ago.
He'd rushed round there with a piece of bamboo at least 10 feet long. There was a Thai girl sitting on a normal sized garden wall with another piece and beteween them they pinned it down. The third person chopped its head off with a machete.
To have the carcass so close after was amazing. Truely a technicholour spectacle. We asked some workmen whether it was worth eating, but they said "no, bad snake". The carcass had gone quickly afterwards.
I was a bit upset at the killing. These reptiles are an endangered species all over the world.
It was pointed out by my Dutch friend that they weren't necessarily thought of as friendly if they were in your back garden.
Down south in Thailand, there are generally snake catchers who will come round and releaase in the wild. My friend had a Siamese cobra evicted a few days later from his property.

Why care so much about some snakes?
I don't get it.
I've had them in my house and in my garden, but am still alive.
Let them live and don't kill them. There are absolutely no reasons to do that!!
Get them out of your property/house and feel the rush of adrenaline!
Some experience don't hurt you. Just be careful!!!
Most of you have never seen or experienced a cobra or burmese phython close up, and you will probably never see one in your own neighbourhood.
But yes, I hate snakes!!!

Why care about snakes, are you kidding. ie Cobra.
Hey the sooner these things are extinct the better.
Same for those whale things, what good do they do floating around all day sucking planctum.
I never once heard the wales come to our defence ie well fight the bosch, so let the japs have them all.
Anyone ever listened to Derek & Clive.
Mike.

Hey Mike I am no great lover of snakes but realise the part they play in the system.Without them you will be overun by rats and every other rodent around, have seen rats the size of cats in Ho Chi Minh as no snakes available there to trim the population.Their primary function is to cull rodents.
Am also very aware that King cobras are abundant in India and parts of the far east but was always uncertain of their existence in Hua Hin and still a little sceptical even after reading new posts.Digger

I believe every animal/mammal has a right to live especially snakes and whales! what magnificent creatures. I have dived with whales and sharks and it was an unforgettable experience. Its just crazy to want these beautiful beasts dead, they will do you no harm if you show them some respect. There are a lot more twatty Ferrangs I'd like to see with their heads chopped off......

Scary snakes...last year was walking down past Huahin Grand and a guy
on a 'V-Max' bike just pulled up after completing his ride from BKK.
Almost straight away a Thai man started kickin' off at him and pointing at his bike...when the biker looked down at his engine, between the
cylinders of his 'V'formation motor, and about a foot from his nuts was a nice green snake slowly coming out for some fresh air after hitchin a lift down here!
(the Thai was lightnin' quick and ragged the 3ft beastie out).

I had a "lovely" experience with a 5 or 6 foot cobra last June in Majestic golf course. I was on the back tee at the 18th when my caddy screamed at me - I thought 'twas because I had the driver out again ! But no - 'twas a beautiful cobra sliding down a tree about 5 yards from me - she thought he was heading for me, hence the scream - luckily he (or she!) was chasing a thing that looked like a lizard. The caddy called a few guys who were clearing some branches nearby - they threw sticks and stones at the snake and he dissapeared into the bushes. I played the hole and was greeted at the 18th green by a nice man with a glass of iced water who had heard about the incident - he wanted to know if I was ok - i just said "no big deal - was it dangerous ? " - I then discovered, if I was bitten and didn't get to a hospital in less than an hour, I would have been pushing up daisies (or whatever the Thai equivalent is) in some cemetry in Hua Hin !! then I needed more than water ! WHY THE F-CK DID HE TELL ME THAT !!!!!
