Favourite Fruits in Thailand

Post by MrPlum »

I've just got stuck into another Kg of Mangosteens and thinking how delicious they are. Currently 10 Baht per Kg. They are one of my favourite local fruits. I often see tourists or visitors look in the markets but not try. Which is a great shame.

Other fruits I'm partial to are Durian, 'Lum Yai', Longans, 'Nok' (Rambutan), Tamarind and the almost-ripe mangoes. There's others, which I won't list, to give others a chance to recommend.

If you haven't tried them folks, you are missing out. You can make hand signals asking if you can try one. Vendors will usually let you. :thumb:

I also very partial to Mangosteens - possibly my favorite, I also like Nok and share a passion for Longon with the missus who is an expert on Southern fruits being from Nakorn sri Thamarat where most of them come from - If you can find them, the wild Longon gathered in the Forest are particularly good.

Must be good for you too!

I like mangosteens, longan, mangos (sweet), and that one that looks like a grapefruit but is sweeter and has a little different taste (sorry, can't remember the name and the wife is not home at the moment!).
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Sumoh, HH.

Green mangos are good also dipped in salt and some dry chili. Also makes great sum tum instead of green papaya. Pete

I'd go along with mangosteen being one of my favourites as well. Also enjoy a good cantaloupe and the small sweet bananas. Most other seasonal fruits are welcome, but I just can't get used to the unripe mangoes or guavas.
hhfarang,
As Pete has said, the grapefruit thingy is somoh or pomelo in English. Agree they're tasty.

Longon, Pomelos and ripe orange Mangoes with big prawns, as my all time favorite.

I've lost my mind and I am making no effort to find it.

Papaya - not exciting but very pleasant - try it with a little Lime juice squeezed over it. Lot's of benefits from eating this stuff.

With regard to eating unripe fruits - I got used to them by eating e.g. Som Tam, which you can have made with Green Mango as well as Papaya and dishes like Plaa Duk Foo - which comes with shredded green Mango, dried chillies and roasted peanuts.

Probably the thing my wife misses the most from Thailand is the fruits.

Here in California we can almost always find longan, mango (sweet and green), durian, jackfruit, pomelos and of course most melons, etc.

Sometimes we can find mangosteen, and rambuthan.

Unusually frozen (whole) durian is available.

But instead of 10 baht a kg the mango steen here was $5.99 per lb

I go for the lot but most of it comes from the garden and the surrounds

Except not locally grown fruits

In the garden we have Mangostines, Guava, Jackfruit.

We also have every known veg and herbs growing in the garden too

The market actually buys from us. Her in doors is up dealing at 3 in the morning

I dont seem to be be able to make a cut but there again I am farang :(

ps We also have chickens and ducks in the garden with the ocassional wild pig wondering through

Self sufficient really :D
