Hi, yes went down to the sofitel beach on the 29th in the afternoon. Saw absolutely no boats (not sailing anyway.. just some moored up on the beach) and lots of flags. Oh and a couple of empty marquees?? Might try again on the last day for the prize giving!! Might actually see something then

Went around the Isle of White in the eighties in this yacht,
just after she had been restored.

She was a J class at 130 feet called VELSHEDA. I think only 4 were ever built.

Now that's a yacht.

I was based at Lee-on-Solent with the Navy a couple of times in the eighties and used to see Velsheda sailing in the Solent quite often.
She was very noticeable being about three times larger than any other yacht around, and truly a beutiful sight.

If she's 130', the main mast must be 150' unless the photo is distorting eyesight measurement. It looks so slim at the top as well. It's amazing that it didn't snap. Any idea what it was made of? Pete

STEVE G :)

It was Cowes week, can't remember the year but a chap (I think he was a scrap metal dealer) had restored her and it cost a fortune to do it right.

A friend was offered a trip and I just tagged along. My God when she was on her side it was frightening, half the deck under water, but what a ride.

The mast was wooden I think, now they are carbon fibre, more pics here.

I just looked this up Pete and the original mast was 184 feet of rivetted aluminium, but it was renewed with carbon fibre.
These boats were some of the most extreme sailing vessels ever built.
