Church Services

Post by Gail »

Can anyone tell me whether the Catholic School holds any Church services at all. Any replies gratefully received.

Hello!

Post by Chas »

Hello Gail, the Catholic School here is in the big-time business of educating the Buddhist children of Hua Hin. And a good business it is as you can judge for yourself by the sheer size of the lavish new building and the exquisite landscaping. No services that I know of as they are mostly Buddhist over there ( students and teachers!)

Not surprised that you picked up on the dominance of the School and the insignificance of the "Church" . .and that you asked your question that way. (and please excuse the emergence here of my long-standing gripe against Church policies. It is a hot button topic with me . ..about which I could elaborate at great length.)

The Catholic Church here ( that decrepit shack next to the school) offers Sunday Mass at 9:00 in Thai and at 10:30 in English. ( The Thai Mass is in Thai, but completely Western in every other aspect . . .dont look for Thai cultural influences!) The English Mass is mostly Filipino.

Being Catholic, I attend from time to time. Happy to give you further details in a PM if you wish!

new bigger church being built to the right of the current one and i don't think the current church is decrepit.

decrepit?

Jimmy, that's just my opinion of course . .but I have been in (and worked in & for) Catholic Churches all my life and I can't remember any church building older or uglier than this St. Theresa's . .and I am including poor churches in Maya villages in Yucatan. Its nothing I would ever point to with pride, thats for sure.

The new church, I have seen the model, is about 1/30th the size of the school and 1/1000th the cost . .if it ever gets built. ( And it even then it looks cheap & ugly to my "architectural eye". . . you may differ on this as is your prerogative . .. no problem.)

Not to move the thread any further away from the original post ( we can debate by IM if you like) I am and have long been critical of the general church policy which creates this situation.

Gail just wanted the Sunday Mass times after all. But it is indicative of the mindset here that this information is not advertised anywhere or posted in hotels, or even very prominently on the street near the church . . last I looked there was a small, tattered mostly Thai sign with Sunday Mass times inside the gate. ( If it is still there.)

church services

Post by pinky »

Pardon me.. but wasnt Jesus a poor man and isnt a service anywhere where a number of people gather to pray.. Dont think Jesus would mind if it was in a shack or a shed..
And isnt the money better spent on helping the poor and needy.. perhaps the vatican with its immense wealth could do a little 'wealth distribution' amongst the poor and needy in the world!!
And yes i am a Catholic..

I agree

Agree completely Pinky. But I think even Jesus would wonder why He is in that dinky old shed while "his church" had just built a billion baht landscaped mansion next door!
