SIGH
It is a pretty disgusting custom, but......
If I am by myself, no way.
But if I am with the male relatives and in-laws there is no option. Everyone insists on keeping my glass full at all times and if you are starting at noon this presents a problem. So ice serves a function and keeps one hydrated at the same time

Absolutely, definitely not!
It changes the taste and takes out that lovely zing on the tongue with Chang when you get a goodie.
We've found a new Thai drinking establishment and they can't believe we don't want ice, so they freeze half an inch of water in the bottom of the mugs. When the iceberg has finally disengaged itself from the bottom I'm sucking beer through an ice float, and if I get it wrong the bobbing lump creates a kind of 'splash-back' (usually up my nose

Just having a quick look at the poll results it's apparent, that supping one beer or another, a whopping 35 percent of us will still insist on no nam kaeng.
That doesn't mirror my experience here, (Bkk) where only a small fraction of any gang of long noses I've met or stumbled into, adamantly refuse any ice of any kind.
Running the risk of being politically incorrect, I would posit that the older, on average, age of farangs in HH skews the results; ie more wedded to tradition, come hell or high water.
Any how, thanks for the replies!

San Miguel Pale (NOT light), Tiger, Leo, Chang, Singha, Heineken, anything 'Lite'. In that order. SM Lite is remarkable in so far as it is quite incredible that anything in a bottle could actually be worse than Heineken, IMHO, but it is.
Had enough of the trolls. Going to sleep. I may be some time....
