Car Security

Post by Dougal »

Are security devices for cars available in the HH area?

I am thinking of one of those thingies that either clamps to or goes over the steering wheel.

Thanks for that. Any idea of the price. Actually I am more worried by the prospect of my brother in law 'borrowing' the car than theft.

I am getting fed up with renting and am reaching the point where buying and then leaving the car parked up when I'm not there is more economical.

A hungry Rottwieler is an excellent deterrent
But not really of any use in Manchester unless it is trained in fire fighting techniques

or install a Trak m8 this tells you where your car is,speed ,direction, via your mobile phone

My advice, for what it is worth, is buy a decrepit old truck that nobody would ever dream of breaking into or stealing.

It will get you A to B so what more do you want?

If you do not want your relations to use your car when you are not there. Just remove the rotor button from under the distributor cap.
There is no way that it will start without it, and unless your relations have a fair bit of mechanical knowledge, there is no way that they will find why it will not start.
Even then they would still have to buy a new one before it would go.

The newer trucks now have 'Direct Ignition' which is a cassette type thing that fits over the engine and replaces the distributor, coil and wires. It's quite a big item to remove and try to hide...

Besides, it would be seen as bad manners on your part if you didn't let them use it while you're away. :( They probably won't reimburse you for any damage either, let alone admit to it.
It's another really big hassle to get it in your name, you may need to open a company or something, and you'll still need a Thai to act as gaurantor for the purchase of said vehicle.
Insurance is another can of worms.

Very good advice. Also buy a brand name that is not popular if you want to buy new. Many select pickups with red plates get their mags nicked. The favourite is the spare wheel. Some *really select* ones tend to take a one-way trip to Cambodia. :cuss:

If you're here only a couple of months at a time, it's probably less stressful in the long run to rent.. my two baht worth.. :|

I was going to rent for the month of October and at a cost of Baht 1000-800 a day for a small car, we found it cheaper to use a taxi. Plus you dont have the hassle of trying to find somewhere to park.

I had a remote alarm fitted to mine. Little shop in Pranburi just past the bypass intersection did it.

They have two models, one for 6,000 baht and one for 7, the dearer one is better, the remotes actually work!

As Vincent wrote things are a little bit more high tech now.

One sugestion is to remove both the two front wheels and the spare. Then you know that if your car is stolen it will be found no more than ten kilometeres away.

Another solution is to syphon the fuel from the tank every time you park the vehicle. Put it into a tank with a skull and crossbones symbol on it.

If the thief/borrower is Thai there is absolutely no way that fule will be purchased to put in someone else's vehicle. This way you will find your stolen vehicle within about five KM.

Another great idea courtesy of Alan B'stard is to wire you vehicle to the mains electricity when parked up unattended. This has an hilarious effect on would be thieves and relatives.
