Topless Bars
If it's anywhere else other than the beach or the poolside, it's not acceptable IMO.
Topless (and in some cases bottomless) ladies in the go-gos are acceptable only in that one venue; I'd feel uncomfortable if a dancer popped out to the McD's in Patpong for a quick burger and was waiting in the queue with her lungs hanging out...
Ther are however some people who defend their 'right' to wear 'appropriate' tropical clothing on their holiday here, with total disregard to the sensitivities of the locals and long-stay residents.
I once wrote an article (on Stickman) on how to get your holiday off on the right foot, and included some dress code advice - I was surprised at the amount of negativity and hate mail I received in response, the majority being 'I'll wear what I like' and 'who do you think you are to say that'.
Call me conservative, but when I bring the wife, kids and extended family out for dinner along the soi next to the Hilton in HH, I don't appreciate (IMO) inappropriate dress-code for that particular venue. It puts me off my food and makes for uncomfortable questions from the kids.

Topless Bars
We dont need two pattaya in thailand. We all like Hua Hin for the way it is.
And a little bit conservative in this point is a good way to preserve a part of the LOS for "normal" farang.[/quote]

I think this topic is really funny. In the past, the Thai cultures allowed brearing tops for men and women to accomodate the hot climate. The influence of foreign culture turned that pratice around so now the Thai wear business suits in all temperatures and farangs now want to go topless in bars. Hilarious.....

Thai women can expose there breasts in the privacy of ther home. If the door of house is open and somebody decides to look in then it is the voyeur that has caused the infraction. Thai people have never paraded themselves naked or even partially naked in public unless it is in the pusuit of some activity that requires it such as boxing or warfare and unfortunately lately the girls on stage in Patpong and Pattaya.
You should study the history of the region before making such comments.

I can see Dara's point, Guess. I often remark to the missus how the Thais have changed their business attire to western styles. Not very comfortable anywhere, particularly BKK.Guess wrote:Not really.Dara wrote:I think this topic is really funny. I don't think the post had anything to do with states of dress in the privacy of one's home. And are you sure that Thai women didn't go around topless years ago? I thought they did. Certainly older style Thai art suggests they did.
From memory (and thai soaps!) Ayuthya era clothing for working class / middle class women suggests they wore the attractive sarang style atire, it left the arms and shoulders bare but covered the breasts and body down to the kneeI can see Dara's point, Guess. Good word!Guess wrote:infraction
Sorry for wandering off topic again but it is late here and I am easily impressed when tired. Once again I find myself catching a quick 5 minute HHAD squint in the wee small hours after slogging my guts out trying to earn my next family sized air fare to Thailand!
Just a PC and my Keane CD to keep me company... wife & kids have been in bed for hours.... only a few weeks to go till HH now..... ahhhhh.... good night all.....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I have only just spotted but then looking at the timestamp I think I was drifting into delirium. My appologies for the unnecessarily blunt response. Reading it again it does not actually state what I was trying to say.lomuamart wrote:I can see Dara's point, Guess.Guess wrote: You should study the history of the region before making such comments.
Lomu is corrrect about the Thai history. It was common before the days of electric fans or even naturally powered fans that both men and women would go about their lives topless. As far as I amare Thai women have only worn bras relatively recently. Many older people (like the old lady round the corner from me) and many hilltribe women do not wear bras and will not bother too much about being spotted topless.
This would never be the case in a place of worship though. Of course attitudes have changed and where some countries the showing flesh has become more acceptable in Thailand it seems to be going in the other direction.
