Worms in your water!!

Post by pinky »

Hi all.. Wonder if anyone can help me? Always buy the big bottles of drinking water for about 12 to 14 baht, never had any problems. EXCEPT today when i was transferring it to little bottles to cool in the fridge. Happened to notice some little worm/parasite type things swimming around in the water. Was not happy as you can imagine especially has i had already drank half of this bottle!!
Does anyone have any idea what they are and more importantly are they harmless?? They were about 2mm long.. Serious answers please .. as still feel quite sick at the thought of it!!
PS took the bottle back to the shop and they just said "ok will change"

Mosquito larvea? Unlikely but possible. But then you must have left the bottle open for a while.

The worms/larva are probably mosquito larva.

How they got into your water bottle depends on any number of scenarios.

If you leave your bottle on the side and have left the screw top off for any length of time, maybe overnight, then that is a probable cause. Mosquitos (and ants) much prefer clean water than puddles.

Maybe the shop you buy your water from aren't being honest in their supply and are refilling bottles themselves from an unchecked water source. Always make sure your bottles come with the wrap around seal on the neck.

You should have an Or Yor number on the bottle, this is an identification number, as supplied by the FDA and Health Department. The number sits inside a white box and looks like this:-Image
The numbers inside the box correspond to the company whose water is inside the bottle (not the numbers on my example). You can always complain to the Tessabahn about the quality of the water and give them the Or Yor number, then they can then check that the company is doing everything correctly.

As I said, I'm not sure where your problem originated from, but always, always, replace the cap on the large bottled water containers after every use. Mosquitos are prone to find any open water source, especially during the nighttime.

Mosquito larva wriggle into a 'c' shape as they propel through the water. Maybe a clue to be sure what you have/had.

See below thread as we talked a lot about water quality. Maybe step up a grade concerning your bottled water. Pete

worms in your water

Post by pinky »

Thanks everyone.. not sure if i feel better or not
Always keep the lid on the water just to be sure and i always check that the bottles have a proper seal. Didnt know about the or yor number on the seal, so thanks for that advice, have checked and the bottles i get do have them on.
Not sure if the worms were swimming in a c shape.. was just so horrified to see them!!
The neighbours now think i am completely crackers as i am sticking my eyeball into every bottle that i open!!
At least none of you guys seem to think its anything harmful.. i hope!!
Thanks again..

That's the first thing I thought of when I saw the thread but I thought I'd let Pinky get a few sensible replies first.
