Hun Sen orders army to shoot Thai trespasses

Phnom Penh - Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen ordered his troops on Monday to shoot any trespassers in a simmering border dispute with Thailand and angrily blasted the neighbouring nation's territorial claims.

His remarks came a little over a week after Thai protesters rallied at the disputed border area near the 11th century Preah Vihear temple, the site of clashes that have killed seven soldiers since tensions flared last year.

"If they enter again, they will be shot," Mr Hun Sen told officials who applauded as he publicly ordered troops along the border to fire against civilian or military "invader enemies" who illegally enter Cambodia.

"Troops, police and all armed forces must adhere to the order... for invaders, shields are not used but bullets are used," Mr Hun Sen said in the speech at the opening ceremony for Cambodia's new Ministry of Tourism building.

Mr Hun Sen also lambasted Thailand's claim to the disputed 4.6 square kilometres of land around Preah Vihear, saying he may raise it at an Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) meeting next month.

"This is a unilateral claim with the ambition of occupying Cambodian territory... If the Thai prime minister put the (unilaterally-drawn) map in front of me, I would tear it," Mr Hun Sen told the audience.

"Cambodia does not want war, but Cambodia deserves the right to destroy enemies in its territory," he said, adding that he would take the issue to the UN Security Council in the case of any aggressive action by Thailand.

Cambodia and Thailand have been at loggerheads over the land around the Preah Vihear temple for decades, but tensions spilled over into violence last July when the temple was granted UN World Heritage status.

Although the World Court ruled in 1962 that it belonged to Cambodia, the most accessible entrance to the ancient Khmer temple with its crumbling stone staircases and elegant carvings is in northeastern Thailand.

Soldiers from Cambodia and Thailand continue to patrol the area, with the last gunbattle near the temple area in April leaving three people dead. The border between the two countries has never been fully demarcated, in part because it is littered with landmines left over from decades of war in Cambodia.

Well, sounds like the Cambodian PM had a good rant, lots of common ground there then. Being more beligerent is obviously the answer then yeah, that'll fix it. Not much neighbourhood harmony around here these days.

Thai Army chief says no tension at Thai-Cambodian border near PreahVihear

Army Commander-in-Chief Gen Anupong Paochinda said Friday that there is no tension along the Thai-Cambodian border near the disputed 4.6 square kilometre plot near the ancient Preah Vihear temple.

He said he had reported the latest situation to Defence Minister Gen Prawit Wonsuwan.

He said the dispute has yet to be discussed in a joint border demarcation committee.

More 'news' in addition to what I posted on your other thread about PAD, SF.

Samak and another official at the time are being prosecuted for signing a declaration supporting the place to be turned into a 'world heritage site'. This was basically a sign off of Thailand agreeing that the 1962 World Court ruling was correct giving the place to Cambodia.

No detail as to how much of the area around the temple was included in the ruling or the 'site' designation. Thailand is not fighting about the temple, but about the land area access to it from the north, which they claim is Thai territory. Much of the entire border has never been mapped and agreed upon because of the Khumer Rough activities in the past. None of it is huge expanses, but a KM here and there.

I think the charges are partially for corruption in that they may have been paid to do what they did, but right now they're saying Samak and party by law should have gotten Parliament approval before signing.

Since Samak was ousted he's still in the USA by all reports, being treated for alleged liver cancer. The other party is here in Bangkok and squawking he'll prove his innocence.

Thailand has lost this issue I think but if they said that, all hell would break loose here. It's going to go back under the rug time and time again I'm afraid simply so not to inform the opposition who will use it as a cause. Pete

It's very sad that any site significant enough to have gained World Heritage status continues to have these problems. And kind of defeats the object of drawing visitors to them.
But I can understand Thailands 'territorial' stance. It's an aspect of their heritage, culture and values which we get used to seeing in many other areas, and which we accept and often respect as the Thai way.
What I can't understand is how the folks responsible for designating the site as 'World Heritage' apparently haven't taken local opinion and demarcation into account and foreseen the potential for conflict?
