I too plan to remain here until it is time to cross over to the other side. I have in my will stated that I shall be cremated and my ashes shattered in the sea.

Married to a Thai I'm going to be interned after cremation in the family plot in Baan Me......as will my wife and the rest of our family. My American family is small and scattered so I don't need to worry about where I should be interned, Thailand is fine with me.

Lots of you express concerns with health care. I had the same concerns before we moved here. I've been treated three or four times at Hua Hin Hospital and am quite content with the service I've received. I think you probably will only feel comfortable there if you are married to or living with a Thai partner though. I've been to Bumrungrad in Bangkok three times, the last for a minor surgery.....it is a fabulous place and beats any care I ever received in the States hands down!

In the case of couples or singles who have no Thai relations there are several other very good hospitals in Bangkok to choose from and you will learn their names as you need to.....either through your friends or research on the internet. They are easy to find.

Over here everyone tends to go to the hospital rather than a doctors office, although there are many practitioners who have a clinic they run several nights a week. While I've always been well attended to at a clinic I did find I wasn't necessarily comfortable with the level of expertise I wanted. For colds and everyday illnesses they are fine though.

In an emergency situation in Hua Hin or Cha Am you are better off going to Hua Hin Hospital or the Petcharat hospital in Petchburi. There is a clinic associated with this hospital in downtown Hua Hin. Again, the level of care in this hospital is considered to be very good by my Thai friends and family.

spitfire :)

There is a very up market nursing/residential home near us in UK that charges almost £2000 a week. They can accommodate almost 60 residents and there is a waiting list a mile long to get in.

Admittedly for that sort of money they get waited on hand and foot but I imagine that would eat into any capitol savings they may have and then force them to sell their homes, if they wish to continue to reside there.

However did I hear Brown say in his speech that Labour plans to give free care in their homes to all retired English citizens, or was I dreaming.

My wife's family are very much against putting the elderly into a home and from what I can gather all there relatives have been cared for within the family home, which is something we in the West seem to have abandoned over the last 30 years.

What could be worse for a loved family member than to die in an institution, rather in their own home, surrounded by family.

As for what happens after I'm dead, well I have told my wife that I want to be cremated in Thailand, no matter where I actually shed my mortal coil.

She seems happy with that, as I told her that if I die in UK or Italy, she can claim the air miles to get me flown there in a box.
Or maybe I will ask to be buried and on my grave stone have carved these words. "I told you I was ill".

Either way, I will be beyond caring.

Not quite what he said, but it wasn't you who was dreaming. The figures don't add up and 250m has to come from local Govt. which they won't have. Comical really.

But back to topic - I haven't even got there yet! But will keep a bolt hole in the UK in case, if all pans out and it doesn't have to be sold?!

But I guess there has to come a time when you have little choice if unfit to travel?

I watched an elderly, infirm farang last year being lovingly cared for by who I assume were his Thai family in his own home - well just outside? I found it quite touching.
