Dolphin

Post by mr lonely »

Much excitement on the beach this morning, people watching a dolphin swimming around.
First time I have ever seen one here.

There are a few rare pink dolphins around the area that are normally further south around the Pak Nam Pran and Dolphin Bay, although I have seen a couple off San Noi before.

We actually see the dolphins quite often on our tours - about a 50-50 success rate of spotting them

There are 2 types, both of which are now endangered and officially protected here:

Irrawaddy Dophins and Pink Bottle-Nosed Dolphins

The population here is said to number around 30-40 animals

A few months ago we saw a few very young ones - a great sign that they're breeding anyway.

The most likely place to spot them is between Kao Kalok and Dolphin Bay, of course.

This picture of the 2 types was taken at the marine park in Chantaburi

No idea what kind of dolphin - you could only see the fin and body in and out of the water.
Everyone was very excited about it so maybe there's some good luck heading this way.

Used to see them more often some years ago - I've been quite close to them in the sea but that was mid to late 80's - quite a rare sight these days

The drift netting has been bad news for them..

Dolphins are every where in Perth saw a pod of them this morning in the Swan river when dropping my son to school. The Swan River is extremely clean, the area in which I saw them is about 30 Klms from the mouth of the river and is right in the middle of the city. They actually get down near the river where I live and thats about 50klms from the mouth of the river

My wife is insisting on a trip to see some dolphins while we are in Hua Hin - am I right in assuming that the best place would be Dolphin Bay?

Don't tell the Japs as they may well net them and beat them to death!

Yes, Barry knows how to find dolphins and I would recommend visiting Dolphin Bay anyway as it's a nice spot even if you don't see any.
