Hua Hin passenger train derailed

Just read on Yahoo that a passenger train derailed close to Hua Hin this morning killing at least 4 and injuring many others.

The train was travelling from Trang to Bangkok.

Does anyone know anything more?

Train derails in Hua Hin, killing at least 7 passengers

A train bounding for Bangkok from Trang derailed in Prachuab Khiri Khan on Monday morning, killing at least seven passengers and injuring many others.

The accident happened at about 4.45am at Khao Tao station in the province's Hua Hin district.

A Nation reporter at the scene said that ten of 15 compartments derailed.

He said that initial investigation showed that at least seven passengers; all women, were killed and about 61 passengers injured. The injured passengers were transferred to hospitals nearby including Pran Buri Hospital.

A doctor said four victims were found outside the compartments while three others were still trapped inside the compartments.

This is the first time that such fatal accident happened in the province.

Reports said that the No 84 train was arriving at Khao Tao station amidst heavy rains.

I cant picture this station? I have cycled all over this area as well.

If my memory is serving me this is the second time in as many years in about the same sort of area

Yep there was an accident about two years ago on the track up by Koh Takiab

Khao Tao is about 15 km South of Hua Hin. I think the last accident was much closer to Hua Hin.
Anyway, I am surprised that there are not a lot more accidents, considering the poor state of the track in many places.

It's just a low platform on one side of the track Randy, not a station like Hua Hin and as pointed out above there was another crash nearby a couple of years back.

This is indeed tragic.
Those poor families, who have lost a loved one. My condolences go out to all concerned.

They just released the names of seven of the deceased. Two are unidentified, but one is a 2 year old little girl or boy. Breaks your heart.

Initial police investigation into the ill-fated train suggested that switching error may have caused the train to derail, Thai News Agency reported Monday.

The train heading to Bangkok from Trang derailed just about 100 meters near Khao Tao station in Hua Hin district of Prachuab Khiri Khan early Monday.

The incident killed at least ten passengers including a two-year-old girl. The train left Trang at 5.20pm Sunday and was scheduled to arrive Bangkok at 8.25am Monday.

"Preliminary police investigation suggested that switching error might have caused the train to derail as it was approaching the station," the TNA reported.

Rescue operation is underway to search for passengers trapped inside the train.

Police said earlier that most of the victims were killed from the impact of the derailment.

All southern route trains were temporarily suspended for one day following the incident.

State Railway of Thailand (SRT) president Yuthana Thapcharoen said it would take at least one day to clear the scene to allow the train services to resume.

The SRT president said a special committee has been set up to probe the cause of train derailment. Result is expected within five days.

"But I believe that it would take more than one day," he said.

Rescue trains from Bangsue and Thungsong stations of Bangkok and Thungsong station of Nakhon Si Thammarat province to help lift the derailed trains.

Just watching channel 3 news, from what I could make out, a southbound freight train ran a red light, and they tried to re-route the passenger train to avoid a collision. The passenger train was doing 105km/hr at the time.
