Do you give to beggars?

Post by Spitfire »

I read this news report and was surprised to have it confirmed even though I have made cynical comments when out and about regarding these guys having lots of money. This guy made 3500 baht in 3 hours  , takes me around two days to earn that at a Thai university. I suspect that this is the case in most tourist resort beachy places.

Bangla beggar’s raking it in: Phuket police

The man stands in front of coins and notes collected from Phuket tourists in just three hours.

PATONG, PHUKET: On a night patrol in the early hours of Monday morning, Patong’s top cop showed a crowd of shocked tourists just how much money Phuket’s beggars can make.

Kathu Police Superintendent Grissak Songmoonnark stopped a known beggar in front of the Pizza Company restaurant on the famous Soi Bangla entertainment strip.

When the contents of the old man’s bag were emptied onto a table in front of curious onlookers, the crowd was amazed to see a pile of notes and coins totaling more than 3,500 baht (approx USD 105.00).

The man said he collected the money in just three hours.

“Do you know why people gave you this money?” Col Grissak asked the man.

“They want to make merit,” he replied.

“Then let’s take this money to make merit,” Col Grissak said.

The police proceeded to take the man to a local temple where he donated 3,400 baht, leaving him with just 100 baht to make his way home.

“I want to ask everyone who gives money to beggars to think before they donate,” Col Grissak told the Gazette.

“If they have the ability to work, please don’t support them because they’ll only go and spend the money on drink and gambling.”

Around 10 beggars persistently take money from tourists in Patong because the penalties for getting caught weren’t strong enough, he said.

“It’s just a 200 baht fine; then we have to let them go by law, so they always return,” he said.

Col Grissak asked anyone who saw people begging for money to call the police or Patong Municipality.

They must make a lot of cash man! So thought I'd put a poll up and get some comments. Do you give or not? Sure there will be a few differing answers here. Personally, very rarely do I give unless it's a real disabled case as the money usually ends up in the wrong hands or spent on the wrong "goods" but obviously there are many that do differently.

I won't give a penny or a baht to anybody on the streets (not even legitimate sellers on flag days in the UK).

I do support charities, but again, only those that I choose to support - I will not respond to cold calling.

Like the guy in the article, it is regularly reported that beggers here in Bath are earning more than I am (£5-600 per day).

I do on the odd weak occasion but as a rule NO

I have seen them dropped and collected in SUVs
I have seen cripples get up and walk away
I have seen cripples on the streets of Bangkok loaded into limos at the end of the night
I know a one armed flower lady in HH who makes more money than me

It is not just Thailand though. The UK is rife with spongers

"spare some change guv" with his flea bitten dog in tow. Here are some dog biscuits then I replied. Beggars in the UK used to get an allowance on their benefits if they owned a dog

The world is full of spongers and the only sure way is not to give them cash but buy them some food and give them some old clothing

Sorry. Gets my goat

BEGGARS

Post by lindosfan1 »

Iused to until oay I saw a big 4x4 come and pick up a begger who was crawling round the streets it is a big businessm yes they are disabled but they are being used. If the 4x4 owners cared they would not have them crawling the streets in rags. This is a common scam in many coyntries.

Just a thought, how much of this money might very well come from Thais? I mean, it's the karma thing isn't it? The cop said people give it to make merit etc, not sure if that's directed at farangs too much as he (beggar) was marched off to the temple for his misdeeds. When I think about it, how much quicker is your partner/wife/girfriend willing to do it than you are? My Mrs is more willing than me, must say, even if I screw my face up disapprovingly at it.

Yes, same to me. I never give anything, but my missus or other Thai friends they usually give some small amount. Kleinvieh macht auch Mist. I think in English you say: many a nickle makes a mickle.

I'm the same; I never give to beggers but my partner will sometimes give them a small coin or two.
This is more often in Issan though where I very much doupt that they're an industry like in a tourist resort and they're generally very old.

Yes BB, for sure, for the ones that have replied, but by the look of it this guy was hanging-out outside Pizza Company which implies both foreigner and Thais. Interesting to get the dynamics/demographics of what a member might think but with a mix of what the wife/girlfriend does.

Yes, if they're disabled - i.e. missing or deformed limbs, not a leg tucked up under them to look like they're disabled.

There's no real safety net for the disabled here, and yes I know they may be put on the streets by 'the boss' in his pick-up, but they still have to pay for their food and bed.

Anyway, it's a good way of getting rid of those annoying satang coins...

I rarely give here in the states, or in Thailand, unless as VS says I see a definate abnormality.

I heard a radio station here talking to some of the 'beggars' and they all say they make more money from begging than working. That evokes no sympathy from me.

I do give to charities, but not to the large organizations like United Way whose CEO makes big money and benefits, along with their staffs.

Mrs BB will sometimes give to somebody who is very old, and looks unable to work.

If the person looks as if they have even a minutes worth of work in them, all she'll give them is a mouthful of abuse in Thai. When I've asked what she said, she says her husband has to work, why can't they?
