I have been curious about the different calendars; lunar and solar; My question: Is the Thai zodiac sign the same as the Western sign. I met this person who claims she is a Leo... yet her birthday is September 4th which is Virgo. Can anyone explain the difference.
Why do the claim the September 4th is the sign of a Leo
Thanks
Is There A Difference
Can't be sure about this, but years ago when I was getting married, July was actually August (or vice versa) on the Buddhist calender that the MIL had - she's a Buddhist nun, so I bowed to that interpretation.
If I remember rightly, month 8 (August) was actually July???
It just meant that I had to rush the paperwork through a bit quicker than expected.
Maybe that's why zodiac signs are different?

I know nothing about the Zodiac, but out of idle curiousity I've just had a look on google and apparently the Thai Zodiac lags the Western one by about 23 days.
One site suggested that this is because it is Earth centric instead of Lunar, but it didn't really go into any detailed explanation of this.

I've now found another explanation that contradicts that!
Apparently the Western Zodiac uses a system concieved by Ptolemy that uses the position of the Sun as a starting point, whereas the Thais use something called the Sidereal Zodiac which takes the position of the constellations as the start point instead.

Yes, that link gives the actual dates for this year but it doesn't stay like that for ever as the starting points are slowly changing.andy778 wrote:Found this site....http://www.thaicultureblogs.com/index.p ... hai-zodiacSTEVE G wrote:I've now found another explanation that contradicts that!

Apparently the two Zodiacs coincide around about every 26,000 years and it's bizarre what you can learn as a result of being bored with an internet connection!
