Thailand seizes North Korean arms plane

Thailand seizes 'arms plane flying from North Korea'

Thailand has seized a cargo plane refuelling in Bangkok airport, which it says was carrying weapons from North Korea to an unknown destination.

The five crew members were also detained.

Rocket-propelled grenades, missiles and other weapons were found aboard, military investigators said.

It is believed that the plane had made an emergency request to refuel. It had taken off from the North Korean capital Pyongyang, the Thai Air Force said.

According to local media reports, four members of the crew are from Kazakhstan, and one from Belarus.

Thai officials said they had acted on a tip-off from foreign intelligence, with one official telling Reuters news agency, on condition of anonymity, that the US had supplied the information.

"It [the plane] came from North Korea and was heading for somewhere in South Asia, probably Pakistan," the same official added.

Another unconfirmed report suggested Sri Lanka as the destination.

Prize export

Local media say about 40 tons of weaponry were found aboard the chartered plane, a Soviet-designed Il-76.

The reported items have been moved to a Thai military facility.

Thai Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaungsuban said the crew had declared the cargo as "oil drilling equipment", according to AFP news agency.

"But when we examined, we found it was all weaponry," Mr Suthep, who is also in charge of national security, told reporters.

"This case will proceed carefully as there are many parties involved... Everything must proceed transparently."

The UN recently increased sanctions against North Korea in a bid to cut off its arms sales as punishment for a nuclear test in May.

Arms sales are a vital export item estimated to earn the destitute state more than $1bn (£615m) a year, analysts say.

The North's biggest arm sales come from ballistic missiles, with Iran and other Middle Eastern states being customers, according to US government officials.

Wonder if it would have got through if they (Thais) hadn't been tipped off by the US? Good catch for them anyhow, 40 tonnes of weaponry. Must say that an old Russian cargo plane with a crew of Kazaks and one from Belarus coming from Pyongyang is a massive red flag full stop. They've certainly got balls landing that thing in Bangkok and thinking that they might get away with it.

One of the stories, forget if BKK Post or Nation, had a one line something like "this plane had stopped here often in the past..." If so and they hadn't been detected before, they obviously thouht odds with them. Not this time. :D Pete

Wonder if we ever get the full story:

1)Who was the consignee?
2) Why did crew from Kazakstan and Belarus request a "translator" from the Russian Embassy?
3) Who paid for the transport?
4) What happens to the cargo now?
5) Will the crew be prosceduted in Thailand?

Or will we just see the usual smoke screen????

Probably because they speak Russian - I doubt Belarus and Kazakhstan have embassies here.
This is the way

Very good!! That was one out of five. You may be right. But there may also be another reason. Smells to me like the Ruskies are supplying arms to rebels in Pakistan/Afganistan from North Korea. .....Russia and North Korea together helping destabilize what NATO is trying to stabilize. What a stinker....

What is a bit unfortunate is that if it was a chartered aircraft, the crew could well have been unaware about what was in the cargo.
I've worked for cargo airlines and they basically shuttle crates around the world.
Obviously the person who got the contract should know what they were flying, but the crew aren't going to start opening every box that gets put on board, they'll just look at what is on the declaration.

Might be right there Steve, but saw the crew on BBC news tonight and they look like a real bunch of salty looking mercenary dude types to me.

Actually I agree with you now as I've just seen a picture of the cargo and it's clearly of military origin.
