Electronics - TV

Post by pharvey »

Apologies if this has been answered previously.....

Having had a property built on the Pavilion Hua Hin estate, near to the Black Mountain Golf club, I'll be returning to Hua Hin over Christmas and New Year along with the Long Haired General in order that she can sort out the furnishings......

But getting the priorities right - where's the best place (price/quality/reliability) to get a decent TV - would it be Home Pro, or are there alternatives? Would also be useful if they took credit cards - the hole in the wall will no doubt be getting an absolute pasting.....

Big Kiang is the cheapest I've found in Hua Hin. Usually his prices both in electronics, white goods and furniture
are slightly under anybody else's. However, do check with other sellers first, then go to Big Kiang, then haggle.

Not only will they (Big Kiang) haggle, I've found their after sales service and installation/delivery service to be better than the big name stores...

What is their address?
They have two stores... one located just past Market Village headed south but on the opposite side of Petchkasem Road and another (I think mostly furniture oriented) further south (over the flyover on the right side) on the corner of Soi 114 and Petchkasem Road.

Even a 42 inch plasma from LG etc can be picked up for around 25k baht, sometimes less, at places like Tesco where I am. Generally I tend to find that once you get into over 50 inch for a TV then the prices really jump crazy like. You often get a sound system flung in aswell, there are some great deals on electrics at the moment, good time to buy one.

Big Kiang is here:

And Big Kiang furniture is here:

At this writing I would not buy a plasma TV and when buying LCD-TV, I would not buy anything less than FullHD.
The price is determined in large part by resolution, and you get for what you pay. When visiting Big Kiang, it is essential to haggle.
The Kiang family seem to expect it and it really pays.

And yes, hhfarang has it absolutely correct; Big K has the best delivery and warranty service in Hua Hin of which I have experience.

I do agree to not choose plasma unless one is not looking for a monster size screen, and even Pioneer have stopped making them although they were the top of the line.

I would recommend potential buyers of large screen TV's to opt for the latest generation of full HD LCD's. Their prices are now dropping after introduction of the thinner LED's (actually they are only LCD screens with LED back-lights, not LED screens - don't be confused), and are equally good.

Consider Samsung as they make the best LCD screens. Samsung actually supply LCD screens to many of their competitors.

I have a 42" Panasonic plasma in the living room I bought here about 5 years ago. It works well so far but I would not buy one again. Way too heavy and difficult to move, and lets off a lot of heat. You actually have to be careful what type of table you put it on as about 50 + kilos of weight is condensed into the base stand which measures only about 24" x 12". Pete

I have been shopping around for another telly for the bedroom here in UK and I'm torn between two models.

The LG Model 47 inch LCD TV,

Full HD 1080p, 80,000:1 contrast ratio, 200Hz refresh rate with 3 HDMI connector sockets to connect to a cinema system. Add in a Blu-Ray player and your set to go.
All for £870. :D

Or Samsung LE40B750 40 inch LCD at £980 (LED backlite) Same spec just smaller screen.

LED backlights give a much better (up to 3,000,000:1) contrast ratio than LCDs (normally only found on Plazma sets), this gives deeper blacks and whiter whites.

200Hz makes for a very fast and stable picture.

LEDs are also cheaper to run, as power consumption is 30% lower than normal LCDs and Plazma sets.

Think I will wait till New Year to see if prices are down a bit more.

Are these sort of TV's much more expensive in Thailand (Hua Hin) than here in UK?

Anyone know?

I've lost my mind and I am making no effort to find it.

Sorted - picked up at the Big Kiang in the end along with copious other items at a very reasonable price...... delivered on time, set up/assembled, rubbish taken - couldn't fault them.

Many, many thanks for all the tips - all very much appreciated.

Now just need to know how to (and who to) complain to regarding the bl**dy developer!! Cheating, lying........ (I guess you guys have never heard that one?!)..... separate thread!!!
