Photos of old HuaHin
PS Steve G - yes the Royal HuaHin was the first golf course, and I think it may have only been a 9 hole to start with. Bernie is the one to ask (although with respect I know he isn't THAT old!)
The Colonial look of the Railway Hotel is because it was deliberately commissioned to be designed by an Italian. The railway was aimed to carry tourists and wealthy Thais at first, so I guess 'colonial' was considered trendy then. Some colonial style buildings had already appeared in Bangkok, under the earlier influence of King Mongkut, who was keen to encourage trade with England in particular.
Worth reading is 'King Mongkut and the British' by M.L. Manich Jumsai, published by Chalermnit at 108 Sukhumvit 53. ISBN 974-85913-4-4

Built around the same time was Mareukathaiawan Palace just North of Hua Hin, also in a colonial/Thai style by an Italian architect - maybe the same one - complete with a cricket square! Now the cricket square is gone but a lovely place for an afternoon strolling around.margaretcarnes wrote:The railway was aimed to carry tourists and wealthy Thais at first, so I guess 'colonial' was considered trendy then. It's a great help that Webmaster is going to take care of the pics and hopefully put together quite a gallery eventually.
I'm still waiting to hear if my old video still exists, and it could be quite some time before there is news. Then it will need re-formatting. But the whole thing has to be a long term project and I hope everyone will stick with it.
If it's OK with Webmaster would an appeal for old pics in the Observer be appropriate? Just a thought.

Since the Observer is now online only an appeal here would have far greater impact.margaretcarnes wrote: If it's OK with Webmaster would an appeal for old pics in the Observer be appropriate? Just a thought.
Here are the photos kaokalok sent in, thanks again.

For those wishing to upload their own pictures please follow the instructions in the first post of this thread:

Thanks guys. I particularly like those photos of the market, and the carefree way people are in the road.
That 1st (kaokalok) photo is interesting. Is that central Hua Hin? If it is, that plane looks as if it has just taken off to me. Was there an airport closer to the centre at one time?
Does anybody know what the last (kaokalok) photo is of? Is the building still standing?

Great old Photos!
It would be good to put together a collection for all to see..
Who else might have some? - The old Photo / Camera shop on Petkasem road between Chatchai Market and Thai Farmers, sorry 'K-Bank' as we call it now, has some good old photos of the Royal family shopping in Hua Hin. Does any body know them?
- I've seen one of Prince Philip on the beach at the Palace as well somewhere?
Regards Sabai Jai
