General info displayed on index page

Post by Spitfire »

Just a quick thought, but how about putting some generally useful or helpful info on the index page in a box, like some of the current major currency exchange rates, petrol/deisel prices, temperature in Hua Hin at the present moment, upcoming Thai holidays and their duration etc?

I know many other websites do it but might be cool for HHAD too as well seens as it's the major online publication for the city. Could even have other members suggest what generally helpful info they'd like to see displayed.

True, but I bet that page is not the first port of call for most visitors, or members for that matter. Most, I'd have thought, probably inevitably end up on the forum index page initially from the google search and members mostly probebly just zoom straight into the forum index page, could be wrong though. I wonder how many new members or 'guests' make all the way through the other stuff, even I haven't read a lot of the other stuff, spend most of my time online in the forum area. The list of info subjects were merely a group of speculative examples though.

Good suggestions, maybe we can have a list here of what readers would like to see on the front page and we'll pick the most popular ones for implementation.

I think weather is a given. Second would be a currency listing but we won't be able to make everyone happy. Perhaps limit it to USD, GBP, Euro, AUD and local currencies: Baht, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Burma, Japan, Korea, Taiwan. No need for Hong Kong as pegged to the USD and rarely changes.

There's also a Thai ticker for gold prices (Thai gold) which may be of interest. See the Bangkok Post site, bottom of home page.

Fuel, I've never seen a published internet update board, just announcements when it goes up or down.

Perhaps the best way to do it is have a sticky that appears all the time, let's say at the top of the 'posts since last visit' page, with everything together in that one place that gets updated automatically. Pete

Could also do major embassy phone numbers but, again, couldn't do everyone, just the ones with high visitor numbers.

Possibly could do average transport costs to and from BBK to HH, train/bus/taxi etc but would have to stress that they were merely "guildlines".

This PTT site has the fuel prices, and instructions for webmasters on how to link to it:

Here's my 2 bahts worth regarding location, well, there's a good bit of space that isn't being used under the search function box on the forum index page that would fit the bill, unless you're saving it for sponsors of course.

Could easily get in a fare few info subjects in there and it would probably look quite cool. Must say, come to think of it, that space has been vacant for at least the last two years since I joined.

Word in the pipeline is that the entire forum software will be upgraded soon so it'll be all change in here.

Not seen this on the site, so apologies if the information is already posted. To expand on the Embassy numbers suggested by spitfire, the whole Useful Numbers is in my opinion a must for anyone travelling to an unfamiliar destination especially those overseas.

I agree Ph

You can pick those up in mags here but to an overseas visitor it would be useful. They could print it out and bypass waiting until they get here

There are many such numbers already on the business directory: www.hhbd.net

It is very unlikely that there are Dutch or Danish speaking police or hospital staff in Hua Hin!
