Car Insurance

Post by han108 »

My Thai GF has a car and when I next visit has said I should drive. She says there is insurance but I wonder if the cover is the same as the UK where you have to be a named driver. Some European policies cover the car and people get tripped up by this when they come to work in the UK and drive.

In Thailand the vehicle is insured, not the driver. There are several different classes of car insurance, and some traps. Goggle "thailand car insurance", there is a wealth of information on the Internet.

And you may want to consider obtaining a Thai Driving Licence, as some policies "small print" MAY exclude you without one.

When I made the car insurance, I could choose to make it for 1 or 2 named drivers or for any driver, which was about 1000 to 2000 Baht more expensive.

Yes, that is correct. But why run an additional risk for 1 or 2 thousand Baht? You may not always have control over who drives your car, and so put yourself at unnecessary risk.

Thanks for the input. I will visit the website. Also looks like the best idea is to take the insurance to the broker and make sure all is in order for me to drive. Not sure if I qualify for a local driving licence as I have not yet applied for any visas.
