Arrests and deportation for Thais overseas

Post by buksida »

These two articles from The Nation caught my attention recently, maybe other countries are cracking down on Thais as Thailand is on their citizens and foreigners in general:

20 Thai workers arrested in Poland for working without permit
Twenty Thai workers, 18 of them women, have been arrested in Poland for working without permit and working outside the permitted zone.

The arrest of the workers was reported by the Thai Embassy in Poland to the Foreign Ministry.

The embassy informed the ministry that the workers were arrested on February 11 in Zielona Gora. They have a permit for working in a foods procession plant but they were arrested for working in a mushroom farm.

They were tried in the Lubuskie court and the court ruled that they must be deported within three months.

51 Thai students to be deported from US
The United States would deport 51 Thai students after a language institute in Florida was shutdown, the Foreign Ministry said Thursday.

The US immigration detained 100 foreign students including 51 Thais for illegal entry after the Florida Language Institute was closed, said the ministry's deputy spokesman Thani Thongpakdi.

Or maybe its just coincidence ...

Should let them see how we feel been treated as second rate citizens and criminals here.

I suspect its hitting the young. Not the rich and powerful who run this Country.

If the rich and powerfuls off springs are hit I guess their answer will a further crackdown on the poor expats here

Arrests and deportation for Thais working abroad

It's interesting to see that foreign nationals breaching their permitted work rules in Poland can be dealt with, but in the UK Poles doing the same seem to go unnoticed.

If you read the stories closely, and between the lines, it almost appears as if that Florida school was a 'front'. It seems they were closed by Immigration, not bankrupt, and it clearly states they were not enforcing that the students attend full time per the terms of their visa. It could have been just a pay to get a visa operation.

There's a Thai language learning visa here now also but I don't know how strict the rules are concerning class attendance and progress in proficiency. Pete

prcscct I suspect you may be right on the pay for Visa jobbie.

There have been a lot of raids on restaurants in this area (South coast) of the UK in the last month and several Thais have been caught, along with Chinese and others from outside the EU.

One restaurant owner got fined £20,000 as this was the second time he had been caught using illegal labour.

Just a drop in the ocean though.
I've lost my mind and I am making no effort to find it.

Nothing new actually, more than one Govt. Dept. got together to 'challenge' such places many moons ago. No fines for employers then, but a few went down for colluding with criminal offences and then it was stopped from orders on high.

Glad to see its having more of an effect this time around with the fine process finally in place.

A drop in the ocean maybe - but it's a start. IMO employers are more to blame often than the foreign nationals who they employ. and who are often 'employed' for peanuts, and without the usual protection of employment law. Not to mention not paying tax/stamps or having any opportunity to become legally settled in the UK.

Very true Margaret, hit the employers where it hurts. I can't but feel sorry for those from the poorest countries, who come here to work for next to nothing and get treated like cattle, just so they can support a family back home.

My sister employees two Polish guys and two Kenyans and the paperwork and visas have to be spot on, or it's £10k per pop.

I saw Immigration officers at the exit of a couple of tube stations last year in London. They were pouncing on any foreign looking people who looked like they were on the way to work and checking if they were legal or not.

I don't know how effective they were but I expect they caught a few.
