The Western Stormers turned in a powerful performance to defeat the Wellington Hurricanes 37-13 in a Super 14 southern hemisphere championship match at Newlands on Saturday.
The Stormers climbed into second place on the log, behind fellow South African side the Bulls, as for the second week in succession they gained a bonus point win against New Zealand opposition.
Aggressive defence was the cornerstone of the Stormers win. Although they conceded two late tries - doubling the number against them this season - they did not allow the Hurricanes an opening until the result was effectively decided.
The Hurricanes forwards were stronger in the scrums and the New Zealand team had a slight edge in possession. But they were unable to make good use of the ball despite having a star-studded backline.
"The last two weeks have been fantastic," said Stormers captain Schalk Burger. "The defence has been our strong point. We're still working on our attack and tonight went a bit better."
Hurricanes captain Andrew Hore said the match was won and lost in the first half, with the Stormers leading 20-3 at the break.
The Stormers took an early lead through a penalty goal by fullback Joe Pietersen, followed by a try in the eighth minute by powerful Fijian wing Sireli Naqelevuki.
The Hurricanes suffered a blow when All Black fullback Cory Jane was carried off the field after a collision with Naqelevuki in the 27th minute. He was said to have mild concussion.
The Stormers took control shortly before half-time when Pietersen and eighthman Duane Vermeulen scored tries.
Vermeulen's try followed a rolling maul from a lineout which took play 30 metres downfield.
For the first ten minutes of the second half the Hurricanes battered away at the Stormers line without being able to break through.
The Stormers, though, scored a bonus point try through prop Brok Harris after repulsing the New Zealanders after flyhalf Peter Grant, who combined well with scrumhalf Dewaldt Duvenhage, charged down a clearance kick by opposite number Willie Ripia.
With the result virtually assured, the Stormers made multiple changes in the closing stages and the Hurricanes scored tries through left wing David Smith and replacement scrumhalf Tyson Keats, while centre Jaque Fourie added a fifth try for the home team.
The win took the Stormers to within one point of the Bulls although their rivals have a game in hand. Both South African teams have one more game before travelling to Australia and New Zealand.
