I hope to move to this area of Thailand

Hello I am new to the forum. I currently live in the UK. I am hoping to retire to Thailand in a few months time with my husband and very old mother! We love the culture and lifestyle in Thailand. Our plans are initially to rent a property, then if all goes to plan, buy something. Just one question in general..are the most of you expats happy living in this area of Thailand? Any regrets at all? Any tips on location etc? Many thanks Regards Siani

If it's on schedule it should open this year. They will definitely have English speaking staff and the Bangkok Group of hospitals has a very good reputation at all their facilities in Thailand. Pete

One piece of advice i always give is consider what you are going to do with 16 hours of your day
find enough stuff to occupy you for 48 hour and that can be repeated 7 days a week 365 a year
boredom is something that can be a problem

What are your hobbies, if you have any you can adapt to suit the thai climate,swimming cycling fishing gardening come to mind.Its better here than spending 6 months stuck behind closed doors trying to keep warm in the UK.And as for your elderly mother it will put years on her.

Getting back to your original question at the top--My Thai wife and I like Hua Hin quite a bit. Close enough to Bangkok to get there and back in a day if necessary for any serious medical or other need but far enough away to enjoy a laid back lifestyle. We lived there for over a year and sold our house but having a new one built so we will be back in July. Lived over the hill and like the feel of the countryside there. Can go into the city in 10 minutes when necessary and mix with all the traffic and lack of parking there but when done, it is a refreshing to live in the relaxed and much quieter countryside. If we want to go to the beach you can go either north or south of Hua Hin and enjoy some beautiful uncrowded and uncluttered beaches. Just enough shopping places that should satisfy your shopping needs but not get lost in it.

if you lease for 6-12 months before considering purchasing you should be able to learn of the developments and builders that are and are not reliable and honest.

Thanks for your advice. I do have a lot of hobbies, also great interest in cooking. I know what you are saying..I have friends that have retired to the depths of Wales,in my opinion they have aged greatly through boredom! The highlight of their week is the weekly shop at Tesco! Not for me this lifestyle! I am an antiques dealer by trade, have been in the business over 45 years. I would be interested in travelling to different parts to see the culture, art etc. I also have a great interest in jewellery, may even have some time to design some. I think it is imortant to have interests, especially when you have more time on your hands. I also hope to make new friends, make the most of the sunshine. I live in Wales, but also have lived in Australia and France. The thoughts of living my old age out in Wales is depressing, we get so much rain, our central heating is on for 7 months of the year. At the moment I feel young, so better to make a move now while I am fit and well. I hope I would not get bored in Thailand, it is a matter of having pleantly of interests. I do have a lot of hobbies, also a great interest in cooking. I am an antiques dealer by trade, have been in the business over 45 years. I think it is important to have interests, especially when you have more time on your hands. Maybe also make new friends, which would be really nice. I have had doubts about bring my mother, but could not leave her behind here, she is only old, not much more. I could afford to have more home help in Thailand, whereas I could not afford it if I were to go to France or other parts of europe. For sure!!, to remind that this information is "true" and worth to considered if want to purchase---no matter with the farang firm!! or Thai firm. Otherwise you will meet the situation like the unfortunately UK farang who just got beaten last month... (you can read in Huahin local newspaper and see in link below)
