I have just returned from my first trip to HH and first to Thailand, I am suffering from depression after having to leave such a great place, counting the days till I return, just got in from a tough day at work, but thought I would just say hi to you lot, need to eat, I will tell you about my trip soon, thanks to all the helpfull people who give advice on this forum, it was a big help to me, Steve.

Hmmm. Sounds like you are suffering from a typical case of 'Thailanditis.' This may develop into the more dangerous 'Thai Fever,' especially if you have come into contact with the female of the Thai species. You will probably go through the 'rose-tinted' phase before the 'cynical' or 'suspicious' phase of the condition develops. Things will eventually settle back down to some semblance of normality as long as you do not develop the rare but fatal 'Bitter-Know-all-Farang' complication.

You will, however, be dogged by an almost unrelenting attraction to all things Thai, which will last for the rest of your life. There is no cure but the condition can be relieved by indulging what you will find is a compulsive need to travel to Thailand at every opportunity - at least once every three months for the first couple of years. If you have indeed contracted 'Thai Fever' this compulsion is even stronger and could make these therapeutic visits even more frequent.

Hopefully you will be able to come to terms with the fact that living with the condition will change your life forever, requiring you to question your own sense of morality, values and even reality the longer it remains in your system. I wish you well.

I have to agree with Jaime about 'Thailanditis', unfortunately it does develop very quickly into the, 'Thai Fever’. There isn’t a cure, but the effects can be suppressed by regular visits to the Land of Smiles.

I am struggling with this affliction, but sadly, I have to wait another 9 weeks for my next bit of treatment. Counselling doesn’t work, so keep taking the tablets.

hey Jaime, nice post, cheered me up a little, but I feel the fever is getting the better of me, if my condition doesnt improve soon, I may have to book another flight.

Glad to have cheered you up Steve. I would think that most of us on this forum are living with the ongoing effects of Thailanditis and Thai Fever so from now on think of HHAD as group therapy.

As for the possibility of booking a return flight - why delay the inevitable?

One more thing Steve - I forgot to mention that I envy you. When Thailanditis strikes it either hits you hard or not at all. The feeling of exhilaration that you have now probably won't last forever but make sure that you consciously enjoy your next two or three visits to Thailand because the chances are they will be the best times of your life!

The therapy I am receiving to overcome the "itis" so splendidly described by Jaime is incurable. No known cure. Just let it intoxicate all aspects of your wordly being, inhale sharply, relax, repeat ten times, and then, only then, you just might realise that all those values held through education, expectation, manipulation(?), are bullshit (confession - I haven't quite gone past this stage yet).

What I know is that there is a big difference between where I currently exist and where I wanna be and it can hurt at times.

hey Jaime, thanks for your support, yes I have been hit very hard, I am missing all the great people I met, Dubai is a great place and I have a good job here, but I could easily give this up to be back amongst all those smiling faces.

I have to agree with all the replies, only last year I was unexpectly hit by " Thai-itis" on a flight home from Bangkok, which once home started to show signs of Thai fever. I was only saved by a big dose of " My Grandma's cow has died" and " I crash my bike and have no money fgor repairs" or as it is generally known " ATMFarangitis" which brought me to my senses.

One word of warning tho, the fever is always with you and will rear it's head when you return. Bet it doesn't styop you going back, it certainly didn't for me!!!

In case the above seems cynical, it isn't meant that way, the entire thai experience has only added to my understanding of thai's, and I still meet the women in question on every trip

I don't know how old you are Jaime or, how many years you have in country here, but you may have missed your calling. Move from those cold climes' to here and start writing books about farangs in LOS and all aspects thereof. You would be good at it. Forget architecture or, do it as a side line consultant here....(gods knows they need the help...?) Pete

Thanks Pete, nice to feel appreciated - I have done a bit of writing for friends but wish I had time for more as I am a bit of a perfectionist and it takes time. I have a plan for a more Bohemian existence which I am currently putting into action so you never know!
