I think the original request by barrys for a source of 'pearl barley' was not as it was ostensibly portrayed, that is for the cooking of Irish Stew. I suspect it may be for the purposes of making Barley Wine!!!

This devilish brew, although it seems so harmless and innocuous at first sight, has laid many a young lady into the arms of rapacious and predatory gentleman. Naturally we could not, as upright and upstanding forum members, condone the production of such a liquor. However, for the sake of completeness here is the recipe:

# What you need: 1 lb. pearl barley, 2-1/2 lb. sugar (granulated), 2 lemons, 1 orange, 1 lb. raisins, 1 gallons water, wine yeast.

# Preparation: Wash the barley grains and soak them overnight into a pint of lukewarm water. Strain then mince the grains with the raisins. Pour about 7 pints of boiling water over the minced grains, add in sugar and the lemon and orange zest, and stir well to dissolve all the sugar. Cover the container well. When already lukewarm, add in the lemon and orange extract and the wine yeast. Cover again and set aside in a warm place for about a week, stirring at least once daily. Strain the solution into a secondary fermentation vessel, top with water and cover air-tight. Rack it when it
turns clear and wait another three months before bottling. Allow at least a year for it to age before tasting.

Barry. I too was looking for peal barley last year. I looked and asked but was not able to find any. I did however find something that looked like pear barley but it was a different grain and was not suitable. I would like to know where in Makro it is situated and the name on the pack please.

Hi poosmate.

In Thai it's called "kao barlay".

In Makro, it's in the small area between the vegetable and fish sections, in the part where they sell spices, garlic, etc.

If you go in from the veg section, turn right and it's towards the end on the right.

It's a 500g bag.

The packaging is transparent with a green surround.
At the top left-hand corner is a chef logo and the lettering "One's good"

The brand name is Dr. Green.

All the rest is in Thai.

I asked one of the staff there for "kao barlay" and he took me straight to it.
