I thought they just tie a rope to the steering wheel, put a brick on the gas, walk to the rear of the bus and go. :D Pete
never saw them use the rope

You have to do as they did in Elizabethan times and hang your ass out of the window.
No one will bat an eyelid.
Are you speaking from personal knowledge here Khundon1975 or is this, as I suspect it is, mere conjecture on your behalf. I do appreciate, 'When in Rome, do as the Romans do', but I have yet to see any Thais hanging their ass out of a bus window. HT.
It may be rubbish - but by golly it's British rubbish.

Crazy 88
It has just struck me that won't quite a few people be getting off the train at HH as it is a rather popular destination at Songkran? So won't there be some spare seating capacity from HH to Chumphon!? HT.

HuntingTigers :)

"I have yet to see any Thais hanging their ass out of a bus window".

Then you have yet to discover the real Thailand.

Not "conjecture" HT, just humour.

I am getting more and more confused as this dialogue proceeds. If I want a crap on the bus, do I:
1. Crap out the window?
2. Wait till the driver ropes up the steering wheel and bricks up the gas pedal and then follow him [at a discreet distance]?
3. Just crap myself and make sure I've got a spare pair of trousers / shorts handy.

Oh, and as an aside but important for me - What time does the HH Railway booking office close?

Thanking you in anticipation Khundon1975 and johnnyk for your frank and fearless advice, and of course any other forumite who replies. HT.

Don't worry HT, KhunDon is just pulling your leg, there is several vending machines in all of the stations with adult diapers for 20 baht.
I think babywipes are 5 baht.

Thank you for your prompt feedback BaaBaa - this is just the sort of 'on the ground' info you don't get in the travel books. I will make sure I have plenty of 20 baht coins with me - in fact I'm off to the bank after writing this reply.

Just a couple of points though. Are there various sizes of adult diapers? As you will know the European male is generally somewhat of a larger build than Asian men, so how can I tell which size to get plus are the vending machine instructions in English.

Secondly, what colours are available? I think this is very important as wearing, say a red diaper, maybe particularly insensitive to some Thais. I await your reply with interest as I don't want this topic to vanish down the pan in a spate of toilet humour.
Oh! And thanks for putting me straight about KhunDon's reply - I don't mind my leg being pulled but this is a serious topic, isn't it?.

The booking office used to close pretty early HT - before 5 pm if memory serves. Times may have changed? But at night the guy only opens the shutters when a train is due. Between times he has to re-stock the diaper machines.

I think Mags is right about the booking office. Personally, I'd go mid afternoon to be on the safe side.
They also used to take a lunch break between 12-1pm, I think. Not sure if that still happens. The main trains can be booked up to 90 days in advance.

HT,
The train windows don't open the correct way so a large carton of diapers may be advisable, especially if you "gin khao phet, phet" in the dining car.
If on the bus it is advisable before hanging one's arse out the window to ascertain which is the leeward side.
