BANGKOK (AFP) – Thailand issued a tsunami alert Wednesday after a major 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Indonesia's northern Sumatra, warning people in coastal areas to evacuate to a safe place.

The National Disaster Warning Centre said there was a high risk of a tsunami on the Andaman Coast, which was battered by an Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 that killed an estimated 5,400 people in Thailand alone.

Since then, Thailand has installed a high-tech warning system designed to reassure tourists and businesses that the country's beaches are safe.

Indonesia reported two small tsunamis and have canceled their warning. Don't know if the flags are down in Thailand yet. Pete

Hopefully, I believe it takes a very particular type of earthquake to cause a big wave but obviously it pays to be wary after what happened before in the region.

I can confirm that several hotels in Ao Nang, Krabi as well as in Phuket were evacuated this morning. In Ao Nang the authorities issued an official Tsunami alert but the authorities on Koh Lanta did not. So the system in place is not perfect.....who would have thought.

The Pacific Tsunami Center in Hawaii cancelled the warning.
