Marine life at Koh Talu, Bangsaphan

Post by buksida »

A few dives around the islands off the coast of Bangsaphan reveals that there is still good marine life to be found in the area.

Due to the volume of tourist boats and the fact that tour operators do not teach snorkellers not to stand on the reef a lot of the coral at Koh Talu has been destroyed. The coral is healthier round the northern headland slightly deeper - out of the reach of the tourists and their rubbish which invariably ends up in the ocean. The two smaller islands of Koh Sing and Koh Sang also have better marine life.

Local fishing boats are also a scourge, all kinds of waste ends up going overboard. Lets hope some local preservation can prevent it being lost. Bangsaphan is a coastal town two hours south of Hua Hin, more information can be found here: www.bangsaphanguide.com

At a depth of around ten meters it was 31 degrees, closer to the shore in the shallows it was hotter, almost too hot to swim in. Optimal water temperature for coral growth is around 25-28 degrees.

The soft corals make is look like there was current running. How big are the tides there?

Good images too, what camera are you using?

Great pics!

This might seem like a stupid question but, as a generally careful kind of person, could you get your your foot trapped by one of those giant clams?

Those are the anemones and they usually like a bit of a current, during the dives there was very little current though - it tends to make photography a lot harder!

Camera was a basic Sony 7MP Cybershot in an Ikelite housing with supplemental focus lighting.

Jaime, usually you're wearing fins when diving and snorkelling so it would have to be a bloody huge clam for you to get caught up in!

Not if you're as stupid or forgetful as me - I stubbed my toe on a sea urchin once - EXTREMELY painful!! Hence the question!

The doc just took one look at my spine filled toes and gave me a couple of packs of sterilised needles, saying "It's going to be better if you do it, as you know your own pain threshold better than I do!" I popped them out a week later after my toes went septic - they came out like darts!
