WWII Bomb Damage

Post by PeteC »

Older sister is taking a trip/cruise through Scandanavia, Baltic States, Russia, Northern Germany this July. She's asking me about architecture and my reply for Hamburg, which I am most familiar with, is that you have to look hard for structures that weren't built 1946>. What about Kiel where she'll spend more time than in Hamburg. Was the city basically leveled? Thanks. Pete

Kiel was heavily bombed because of the docks and shipyards industry.
Most of the u-boat pens were bombed several times and so were the Blohm & Voss Shipyard where Bismark and Tirpitz was build.
The battle of Ruhr in 1943 by the RAF also took it's toll on the heavily defended Kiel/Hamburg area.
Both the 8th US Air Force and RAF combined bombed the city several times during WW2, not only because of it's strategic importance, but also because of the important waterway, the Kieler Kanal (the Kieler Channel).
As a result of this you will find mostly newer buildings from the 1960's and upwards.

It the cruise liner calls on Tallin in Estonia your sister will be enjoy the old town. A lunch at the restaurant "Olde Hansa" is recommended and good quality amber jewelery is chap to buy there.

Stockholm, with its Old Town, is also amazingly beautiful with many small allies and restaurants although some parts of it are a bit too touristic. Stockholm was built on 14 islands and its archipelago has more than 25 thousand islands.
