The Bangkok Bank do have an office in London and I've been in touch with them. They are a commercial Bank and don't deal with retail customers. They are not linked electronically with Thailand and will not accept phone calls or email instructions. I think I'll explore the possibility of getting a Baht cheque book and post cheques to pay my service charges etc.
There is a furniture store on the left heading towards Chaam from HH called Winner. It's a Thai MFI style store but prices are cheap and there will be enough choice to get you started.
Does anybody have a definitive answer re a non resident instructing a Thai Bank from the UK.

I think the reason why you've get no answer is that it's impossible to stay overseas and instruct a Thai-bank to do anything.
This must be sorted out before you head for home.
You could arrange with a friend to take care of bills etc., but in the long run you have to arrange everything before you go back home.
Bills from companies like water, electricity, telephone, your law office and plenty of other similar things can be arranged and paid by your bank connection in HH.
I've always used the Bank of Ayudhya.
No problem to transfer money from europe to Thailand.
No problem at all with that bank.
But, as I said, you have to arrange everything before you leave HH.
This must be sorted out before you head for home.

We have a dedicated account at SCB and use this account to pay nearly all our utilities by direct debit including water, electricity, telephone, UBC and internet. We also pay local credit cards with the same system. Easy to top the account up from a distance, wife says system takes time to set up and most banks offer the service.
Have just looked at the bank of siam website http://www.scib.co.th/en/home/default.a ... chLang=Eng and there is an online demo of all you will need to know about how it works.
The english translation is not the best, but if you have someone with you who can translate, that should be OK.
During that demo, you can access a printable pdf of the application form, but that is only in Thai, but again get someone to translate it for you and you should be able to find all that you need to know.
About opening an account up from outside the country, I doubt very much whether you will be able to.
Where I am in Australia, you have to front the bank and pass what they call a 100 point ID check, where they have to verify and sight all of your details and documentation (I would imagine that there is the same procedures there).
I was in HH in June and used my own Australian Internet Banking system to pay bills etc while I was there and all worked 100%.
I used my own Commonwealth Bank Australia debit card to draw money from my cheque account and it all worked OK in most of the ATM's that have access to "Mastero"
Just costs me $5.00 AUD every time that I used them, so used to draw 20 to 30000 baht at a time to keep those costs down.
If you are going to keep you UK credit cards to use out there, you should be able to set up to pay all of your major utilities in Thailand via them (visa/mastercard/amex) and all that will happen is that your credit card company will have to convert the transaction into UK currency for statement purposes.
I would imagine all the charges you will incure will be a small currency conversion charge for them having to do that.

When we were there in October we opened an account with the Kasikornbank, which is opposite were the Sony shop used to be before it moved to the Index complex, in fact now I think of it, it is on the same side of the road as the Poly Clinic about three or four buildings north.
It cost us 300Baht each, that was for the issue of an ATM card, which you can use immediately, either to draw funds from a machine or use for shopping, providing of course you have sufficent funds in your account to cover your purchases or withdrawls.

I can still check my account, from the U.K. using their automated telephone system.

Correct, just did this yesterday and my login and pw was sent today (thats what I call efficency!). Can do pretty much everything online; check balance, transfer money, pay bills, with the exception of drawing cash out of the monitor. Just to check I got this right you can transfer to accounts at any Thai bank-- without having to inform the bank on paper first?
I have a Bangkok Bank online account but you have to set up recipient accounts by filling in a form and going to the bank and waiting a couple of weeks -- seems idioticso I don't use it. If Kasikorn are any good they get my business.

I can transfer from my Thai Farmers account to any other Thai bank (this is nothing to do with UK banks by the way). I used to go to the ATM to do it but now can do the same online, the charges are the same too.
I can also do this with other banks including Bangkok Bank where I have another account. Again I stress that these transfers are between Thai banks, I would imagine international transfers would require more paperwork.

I can also confirm what Buksida says.
Using Bangkok Bangkok for thai to Thai trasnfers is a piece of cake
I use this account to regularly send and receive overseas funds (admittedly, this I do only in person), but I find them quite fficent adn the costs are very resonable.
However, I have found that 40 ciggies occasssionally, to your regular contact helps wonders!!!!

Once you are set up with Kasikorn just log on to their internet banking page and you can choose from a list of banks to pay.
You choose the bank then enter the name and account number you want the payment to go to.
It can be used for one-time payments or regular payments like utility bills.
You can even use this service from a Kasikorn ATM.
Staff at the main Phetchkasem Rd. branch have been most obliging and helpful to me.
