Reading matter

Post by Orange »

One thing I have missed on my recent trips to Hua Hin has been a good English language magazine or paper. I used to be an avid reader of the Observer but now it has become an online only publication I lack something to read when I am sitting alone somewhere (beach, bar etc) Is there anything that anyone can recommend that I might have missed, or is new? Seems like an opportunity there for someone if not.

Good read, up tp you, but I could find the Bangkok Post and Nation if I looked early enough in the day.

Thanks for the replies but I should have added the word 'local' to my original post. I have seen Hua Hin Today but I found it boring and poorly written, plus hard to find anyway. Bangkok Post and the Nation are OK but being broadsheets are a bit of a pain to read on the beach! Free would be nice but not a prerequisite.

Unfortunately Hua Hin lacks such a publication, probably due to the lack of actual content for one - nothing really happens here in comparison to Phuket or Pattaya. All we have are tacky Indian produced advertorial rags and the poorly written HHT as you've already noticed.

I know what you mean. You cant really read online stuff on the beach and do Sudoko and crosswords.

I used to love the Observer for that despite the overload of property ads

HHT is a bit boring for me

Now when in a cafe or by the pool I grab a copy of AWOL. Lightweight but early days. Content varied and lots of tongue in cheek stuff but at least you can have a laugh and do the crossword and sudoko

As Buksida said, in HH mags are a bit sparse

Best go armed to the beach with a good book or a crossword book. Personally when on the beach I'm too busy people watching  You learn far more

buksida and richard,
Thank you for your comments; it isn't necessarily information I am looking to read, although that would be part of what I am looking for, so this AWOL sounds interesting. Is it a local magazine? Where can you get hold of it, and how much is it?

Years ago I used to walk around with one of these in case needed. I found myself many times sitting on a beach with nothing else to do and studying it. Always a beach vendor nearby to practice with and a lot of fun to be had. :D :thumb: Pete

Another good suggestion and one that I will seriously consider, although mastery of foreign languages has never been, like many Brits, a strong point. Good to know there is a free and readily available local rag though, so i will be looking out for it on my next trip. Does anyone else have any opinions on it?

Hi Orange,

I've tried it a couple of times but there's just no content in it regarding Hua Hin, maybe 5 minutes reading at best and it's stuff I've already read on here. Just had a look at the latest copy to see what's up and the frontpage news about HH is talking about the new hospital and homestore that are being built, they were discussed on here last November and December respectively!!!

As others have posted, so little happens in Hua Hin there's just not enough news to fill the columns, I find the best options are the bigger glossy magazine type publications that cover Hua Hin, Bangkok and Thailand in general. 'HuaHinTown' is one and there's a couple of similar, you can pick them up around town at various outlets.

Hi Orange,

I brokedown and bought a Sony reader so now I have over 200 books stored in something the size of a 50 page paperback book.

We have another thread on this, but they are easy to read in sun, or shade, and of my 200 books I've paid for 3.

Now I always have something to read.

If interested I can dig up the old thread when I have a little time.

Hi Migrant,
Thank you for your suggestion, and it is something I had thought about, as it would mean being able to read the Observer on the beach, along with other material. How much was the reader you bought, and what is the battery life like? Are they available/cheaper in Thailand? The only thing I would be worried about would be leaving it wherever I am sitting if I want a swim, something you don't need to think about with books or papers/magazines, especially free ones.

I paid about $230 usd here in California. On vacation I probably read 2 hours a day +_. Last vacation I was down to half battery life after 10 days or so, the battery is very good.

Security would be the problem though, it's easy to conceal for both the owner, and the thief!!

If I go to the beach I'm with the wife who doesn't swim so I have a built in 90 lb security system!!

yep there sure are - especially in Binta

The weeping willows cry
