Agree with your sentiments about voting with your feet if service is bad, but whilst SCB will lose our business for good, we might lose their interest for good. For what it's currently worth at 0.5%.

Generally, SCB seem more alien-friendly when it comes to opening the regular savings account, as they automatically pay us the interest that Thais or 'resident' foreigners get, without the need to provide any additional documentation like yellow books, work permits or PR. Krung Thai Bank, as Roel rightly posted earlier, do not automatically pay foreigners interest on a savings accounts, the main branch across from the Tessabahn told me I would need to bring in one of the above 3 documents to qualify for interest.

SCB, Bangkok Bank and Kasikorn Bank all seem to pay the interest without additional documentation, anyone know what Bank of Ayudhya do? You might see an entry in your bank book every 6 months, often end June and end Dec, with a code like 'Int' and approx. 2 Baht in the amount column :D

Try one of them instead.

I have friend over from the Uk who is on a monthly tourist visa.

Is there any way he can open a bank account here and what is required please?

I think you may have a problem with only a 30 days tourist visa, but Bangkok Bank seems to reach out a hand to visitors such as your friend.
