Here is some news about Hua Hin Nadpob Market. At this time it is being build at the old Satukarn Square in the center of Hua Hin opposite the municipality. It has a very colourful fence.
Hua Hin Nadpob Market will have shops for products and services of premium quality for standard or lower price. The restaurants on the 1st floor will serve good quality food with fine taste. And the food court on the second floor will serve local food from Petchaburi, Hua Hin, Pranburi and Prachuap Khirikhan.
And important to me and my husband Nadpob Market will be wheelchair accessible.
- Ramp access with rail at the front, the back and the side entrances.
- Elevators from the uderground car park to the 1st and 2nd floor.
- Wheelchair accessible restrooms on the 1st and 2nd floor.
- Ramp access to the hotel Baan Silarhom Hua Hin at the backside.
That's surely going to mark the end of HH Shopping Mall. The new 'market' certainly looks smart, and I understand the need for that on such a prime site. But it just won't have the same hotch potch outdoor feel of the old Satukarn Square.
Still, on the plus side they can turn the old Mall into another hotel!

Maybe not Mags; I thought the same thing when Tesco and Villa Market opened but old HH mall is doing even better than ever. They have recently expanded and now occupy that same space on the second floor that is above their first floor grocery. They installed two escalators in the rear of the old section and moved all the housewares and appliances to the second floor so that the entire first floor is now groceries, cleaning products, and cosmetics.
Also, I still go there because many items are cheaper than Tesco and old HH mall even carries some imported items that I can't find at Tesco (Villa Market has them but at a much higher price).

The Geeun Tueng (sp) store is also very busy, we use it because it saves crossing town and is also a fair bit cheaper than Tesco for a lot of household items.

Yes, and by the way, that big green construction fence on the corner of Soi 94 and Phetkasem road is supposedly surrounding a project by the same "G" market owners that will be another grocery, shopping mall, hotel type of place.

Now I certainly get the drift. The six storey best western Hotel in the back and the Thai Nadpob market in front. Right in the vicinity of the major Hotels & so fourth.
Margeret you are certainly right it would take away the airy out door feeling from the place that was once Satukarn Square. It sounds all very very impressive but would let's see how things going to develop with this project.
Hhfarang krab let's do not forget that the Gee Aun Tueng family is ine of the guys here in town and started out as a Pharmacy Business soon they filled Hua Hin with their Pharmacies so they own a Monopoly of this busyness. Even this Pharnacy chain from Bangkok called Fascino had a shop just next to my close friends place which is Hua Hin Books @almost the end of the 1st half of the Night Market! The Gee Aunt Tueng Market across the Rail road has some major faults. They constructed the entire hall first than build the car park behind it. Which I think it's wrong way of doing. From what I heard from the place which corners Soi94 and Petchkasem is that Central is holding that site idle for a future Mall/nHotel project of some sorts in cahoots with Gee Aunt Tueng perhaps!

Understudy, I hope you're right about the Central. That's about the only thing left that Hua Hin doesn't have... a large department store. I was disappointed when neither Central nor Robinsons were a part of Market Village.

For those of us who shop at the Van Prannee Market in the Hua Hin Shopping Mall, I don't think we will change our habits because of the new glitzy, high rent building next door. As one said previously, they have a very wide selection of products, many of which are only available there and at Villa and their prices are amazing. I buy fruit juice there for 33 baht that sells at Tesco for 65 baht. I don't know how they do those prices but they get my business.
The Van Prannee bit of the HH mall is great..takes me ages to find stuff, every other isle has a coupla Thai girls squat-down eating noodle soup! The check-out girls always give you a wai after paying (to which many farangs ignore..whats wrong with you stuck-up cretins?..give the lady a smile in return at least!)
And the place keeps on doing well,despite the trendy M.Village & Villa.
Gee supermarket comes a close 2nd..great when you can buy catering packs of cooking oil etc up to 10pm.

Thats good to hear HHF. Sounds like the Mall is rising to the challenge - good on them. I do agree that some very surprising stuff can be found in the Mall - that's been the case for years now. And I was pleased to see they had expanded their frozen range.
Any store which can give Tesco a run for it's money has to be admired. I just hope people will continue to support the Mall despite increasing competition - and that expats who normally stick to Tesco simply because of the 'brand' will give it - and G supermarket - a try.

We always call it the "Chinese Store" too, so don't know if it has a name but it is also worth mention as occasionally they have had items that I couldn't find anywhere else (before Villa opened at least). It's fun to rummage through that place as you never know what you will find.
And "G" market must be doing ok as they have opened that new smaller store on the corner of Chomsin and Phetkasem. I haven't been in there yet though because of lack of available parking.
My wife and I noted recently that even though the "housing bubble" has burst in Hua Hin, businesses like grocery, shopping malls, furniture stores, restaurants, condos, and hotels (even big chains like Intercontinental) are still being built and opened.

All these glitzy malls are great for people who like that sort of thing but I hope the old shopping mall and the various markets around town thrive as well because I really much prefer shopping at those kind of old chaotic sort of places.
I like that Aladdins cave effect where you never know just what you're going to find next.

Couldn't agree more - and I do hope the old places can keep going. But looking back through these posts there's really only a handful of other HH expats on here who are of the same opinion - HHF, Buksi, Usual Suspect etc. People who have been there years and aren't phased by rummaging around in the back of ChatChai market for example.
I'm still concerned that there are many more - newer - expats who will be drawn to the 'safe' options like Tesco.
There seems to be a basic difference between those who had to search to find things 'pre Tesco' and those who now know they can do a 'one stop shop' - or almost that - at MV and Villa. It's what they were used to doing at home.
So it would be good to hear some other opinions from the newbies on shopping habits - come on guys!
