That caused a lot of hassle with backpackers arriving expecting to get rooms for next to nothing. They would reject 150 and wander off down to the wood hut rooms, only to return later defeated!
I can't tell you how true that was when I was working on Koh Tao years ago.
They'd show up with their heads up their asses thinking their precious bible would knock the price down! :D
It didn't and off they'd mooch, thinking the next place would be any different...

Right now unless you have bases, houses, places you've got on the cheap from when the goings were good and boom was on it's hard to crack into Thailand and live cheap like back then.
I'm glad I met into the 'zone' of where to go and stay in those heady days.
Coming out now with the £ falling into the abyss would of been financially impossible back then for me.

Very true Rider - contacts are everything now.
I do remember in 2000 we had a visit from a 'researcher' from the other well known guide (so well known I can't remember it's name!) - but it was a big player after the LP.
The poor lass - a student - had only 2 days allocated to cover HH, which even then was pushing it. She had never been there before and just finding her way around was difficult. I really didn't feel that she had either enough time to take notes, or indeed see much of HH at all. Pointed her in the direction of some other guesthouses and that was that.
I never did see a rep from the LP, but phoned them once to express concern about out of date info and inaccuracies. Whoever it was I spoke to didn't seem too bothered to be honest.
A sprout is for life - not just for Christmas.
