I saw an American politician on TV who said the universe is only 6000 years old.
yeah...by some surveys he represents about 50% of the Amerykuh electorate.
actually this does involve some scientific controversy.
See I, like others, are finding it hard to believe that if we have been kicking about for all that time, why we only find "civilised" societies for about 8000 years or so. I cant see that making any sense.... surely civilisation may have developed before that, and been washed away literally at the end of the last Ice Age when sea levels rose drastically. A possible and seemingly logical explaination for the "deluge myth" common to almost all societies from ancient Mespotamia to the Aboriginies of Australia.
while we are down there lets look at Australia....90% of the population currently live round the coast. A drastic relatively rapid sea level rise (such as at the end of an ice age) would wipe out all trace of those cities.... combine that with a few thousand years under water and hey presto...no trace left.
Look at a map of the projected coastines pre-ice age melt and look at them after (their modern world versions). In some places the maps are hardly recognisable....massive incroaching of tidal levels wipes out large swathes of coastline, and thats where civilisations wre most likely to be. There appear to be at least two pre-Harrapan cities under 30M of water off the east Indian coastline that have recently been discovered and await further investigation....large swathes of ancient Alexandria is already under water.....how many more will we find if and when we bother to look? Underwater archaeology is a very recent development....we have only just started looking.
Orthodox archaeology says in Mesopotamia we apparently went from wandering nomadic herders to settled agrarian civilisation with fully developed religion and law in one easy step..... or did we? Just doesnt seem to make sense....that belief makes me a quack tho. The nice thing is that science seems to be shifting towards an old civilisation model. Thats what I love about science -it changes and adapts whereas dogma doesnt.
when I was growing up Neanderthals were dumb lumpen semi simians who died out because they were too thick too slow and too underdeveloped to compete against homo sapiens. Now we know that was wrong, and that we just bred (and wiped) them out as the strongest competitor in an ancient race war. They were similar to us in most ways, and some north europeans seem to be a hybrid of the two. Tryannosaurs and Brontosaurs had flexible whippy tails, and were slow moving... now we know that was wrong. So science changes....and hopefully we are now pushing the civilisation model backwards through time.
But even my old civilisation quasi-quackery pales into utter nothingness next to the shining idiocy of a young world creationists view based on a literal reading of allegorical iron age foundation myths. One that states that
all science is wrong, that the earth and all around us is between 6 and 10 thousand years old, and the answe to every question is God Did It!
One held by a large/majority percentage of the US population (oh and the Turks, Iraquis, Afghans and Iranians too.....). See when I poke fun at yanks for their dumb delusions I do so in the knowledge that other states also believe in such pig ignorant quackery.
Its just that Amerykuh seems to be the only "western" "developed" country to still believe them, and certainly the only one to claim any scientific authority.
