Re: Movies on DVD

Post by sandman67 »

If theres a genre of film that has me turning over its torture horror like Hostel. I just dont see the point.... its like an acceptable level of snuff film. Sooo... I was pleasantly surprised to find one that is billed as that genre, which has done it a massive injustice as it definitely isnt.

THE FINAL tells the story of a bunch of picked on schoolkids, the meatheads that make their lives living hell, the domestic hell that makes home a nightmare, and a halloween fancy dress party that they throw that nobody will ever forget. Imagine Columbine meets Rob Zombie with a chainsaw.

Its actually a very watchable film, and the gore is less than you see in your normal slasher horror like Halloween. You can actually feel sympathy for the kids who get their own back, and theres a chilling live snuff on the net twist in the back. The script keeps it real, and when the choppin begins its done off shot, with sound effects only, s its your imagination that fills in the gaps....much more effective than CGI splatter. I really liked the script, and the acting is pretty good for no namers.

I like it... y can actually see this happening, and that to me is scarier than any amount of throat slashing eye gouging torture for tortures sake.

Id recc you check it out

A definte keeper....and thats a major surprise.

Two films from a couple of years back I have seen recently are worth a mention, they were on UBC the other week:

ONCE
Set in Dublin, a busker and an immigrant bring their musical talents together to record a few songs. I'm not really into romantic films but the music in this one was so good I had to watch it (and enjoyed it). http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0907657/

Sound track: http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/3987884 ... %282007%29_

INTO THE WILD
This film reminds me of my early days when I sold up and travelled to Oz. It follows a young fellow on his journeys to Alaska after doing exactly that - he meets a bunch of great people and ends up in the wild, literally. Watching this gives me serious itchy feet and a strong desire to hit the road again. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0758758/

Sound track by Eddie Vedder is also great: http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4799993 ... .scambioet

I've also been well impressed by the TV series Spartacus Blood and Sands which has been running on one of the movie channels. It is a great gladiator story of love, life and death in the arena - the screenplay and effects are awesome. Unfortunately though the ministry of censorship have cut out all the good bits so I'm downloading it here: http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/5660110 ... DL_King%29

SPLICE

Horror films by default require suspension of disbelief to make them work....and the more you have to string up your WTF muscles, the less they work. So, something like THE FINAL remains visceral and red of hand, but remains believable to some degree, and so is sort of scary. SPLICE Isnt in that category...not by a long chalk. No, SPLICE is one of those that trips over its big red clown shoes and falls splat flat straight into a king size custard pie. In two words: Bloody Awful.

The two main characters, a pair of devil may care gene splicing Einstiens, throw caution and the law to the wind when they decide to splice their own DNA onto a previous multi source splicing experiment that has produced two mega maggots. The resultant human hybrid turns out to be a nightmare....what a surprise.

so what is it that makes this film suck so bad: Is it the constantly blatantly stupid decisions these geniuses make? Is it the thinly vieled attack on science and scientists as irresponsible idiots? Or is it that sitting through this dross requires you to take a handful of mogadon and continually hit yourself over the head with a blunt object before it makes ANY form of sense. Or is it just that the script sucks its lifeblood from SPECIES, washes it through a Republican spin dryer, swallows it down with a cast of shitty incompetant overly emotive B actors and shats it out as a steaming pile of off white poodle crap into your bowl of popcorn?

Watch it at your own peril....personally Id advocate not bothering and simply sticking forks in your eyes....equally as painful and pointless as the time lost watching this crap.

well, I eagerly awaited its release, and yes it was worth it. Its medium budget, grim, grimy and dark...heeeres BLACK DEATH.

Its 1348, two years after the bloodbath French campaign of Edward III that ended with the massacre at Crecy. The returning soldiers bring with them the Black Death, and now plague and misery stalk the shattered land. Osmond, young novice Fransican monk with a complicated personal life and his own struggles with his faith is recruited by Ulrich, a Hospitaler crusader and stormtrooper of god, to lead his party of inquisitors through the marshlands to a village apparently untainted by the plague. Ulrich suspects necromancy is afoot. What they find at the end of the jourey is much much worse...a village of non believers. Hell follows in his shadow.....

It was a small budget production so the sets are limited in their authenticity (they are a wee bit too clean), but all else is perfect - great plot and script, outstanding acting by the Brit cast of drama names, and a killer ending a la Name of the Rose, which this really reminds me of.

Is it a keeper?

You bet your mail fisted broadsword wielding right arm of god it is my necromantic chums. Go get it.

Ive always liked the manic madness of comedian Omid Djalili and especially the cliche cameo parts he plays to teh hilt in films, and his latest THE INFIDEL is just pure laugh out loud hilariousness in a DVD box....

Omid plays Nasir, a salt of the earth dyed in teh wool east end muslim businessman who in secret is a pretty bad muslim, sneaking fags and pints when nobody is watching. He stuggles to balance business and family life with his religion, until one day his mother blabs that in fact Nasir is adopted, and was in fact born a jew..... and now his real father is on his deathbed. Cue massive identity crisis with hilarious results, as the fathers Rabbi wont let an infidel see him, and Nasirs only mate who can help is an alcoholic jewish taxi driver called Lenny.....

Its the one liners that will have you rolling about and choking on your popcorn. Heres a couple:

Rabbi: So what do you know about Jews?
Nasir: They have big noses?????

Nasir tells his mate and "jewishness coach" Lenny about his real name - Solly Shimshillewitz:
Lenny: Solly Shimshillewitz? Why didn't they just call you "Jewey-jew-jew-jew-jew" and be done with it?

Really this is a great Brit comedy... funny and thought provoking at the same time.

A definite solid gold keeper all the way

adding to prcscct's post Tesco seemed to be having a DVD sale when I was in there the other day - a mix of Thai and western films in the bargain bucket.

Mrs S, having the patience of a rattlesnake when it comes to my passion for films, didnt let me dig thru enough to see if they had Thai films with english subs..... the clothes section calleth.

I would mention that the Thai films in Tesco are usually Thai soundtrack only..... ho hum. Still worth a dig though as sometimes the little darlings get a job lot of Thai films with english subbed disks and sell em off cheap to grinning madmen like me.

On the film front action fans should keep a scaly eye out in Sept for the new RESIDENT EVIL film - its a corker!!!

Just pure class, as are the first two and most Pixar films.

Probably THE best film trilogy as there isn't a dud.

Raaaaah! Whirling Blades of Death Scissor Kick! 72 Blackeyed Virgins Punch to the gonads! Feeeeeneeeeshin muuuuuuuuuve! Bap Splat!

Yep....ive been watching TEKKEN

So is it a great film? Well.... no its complete brainless sci-fi dystopian beat em up tish tosh. Its based on a simple beat em up computer game. whaddya expect...12 Angry Men? (well theres at least that many as the body count hits the ton at sometime just after the intro credits roll....). But its sodding hi velocity no brain bag o popcorn and a beer lovliness all the same.

The backstory supporting the fight scenes...lets be honest eh..... well thats a dressed up version of the later versions of TEKKENs inter-fight cut scenes, and makes as much sense as Unilever whitening products do. But the fights....wow! CGI Wire Fu madness at its best. Oh and they chucked in some tasty ladeees in bikinis kicking the cack out of people too for the geek boys.

Its all a multi colour hi octane biff fest, and it works for me.

A solid keeper, HDef DVD Rips are out on the net so dont accept shoddy copies off the lads.

Haaaaiiiya! Fifteen Deadly Cobras in a Beancan Punch!

A couple of proper treats in the goody bag today.... lets get started:

If the Brit film industry does seem to claim its ouwn turf, then its horror comedies. There have been a few real corkers of late, and BOTCHED can stand alongside those with honour.

BOTCHED tells the madass twisted tale of a break in gone very very wrong ideed. Our hero, complete with two idiots for hire breaks into the corporate HQ of a Russian family business to steal a crucifix once owned by Ivan the Terrible. His employer left ot the fact that the family are his decendants and are as equally batshit as old Ivan. Horror slapstick and cat n mouse fun ensues.

Yes the accents are bad, but thats all part of teh joke.... cliched Russians and skits on slasher films are the dish de jour in the same mould as SEVERANCE which was made by the same crew.

It made me laugh and thats what counts. Its a keeper. Solid.

Next up we have the Roman vs Picts version of Braveheart.... or not as the case may be. CENTURION is an all action historical romp through the factual conflicts in the mid 100s AD covered by P. Cornelius Tacitus's historical document The Agricola, where the Roman army hit the brick wall that was the Pictish nation of Caledonia. It blends the history nicely with a fictional tale of a unit left way behind enemy lines by the retreat to Hardrians Wall, their struggle to get home, and questioning their values and reasons for occupying a country so bleak and unwelcoming.

The action and fight sequences are taught and CGI splatter heavy - limbs and heads regularly go flying so no kids watching this one is my recc.

Its excellent historical fantasy stuff in the same mould as Braveheart and Robin Hood. Excellent plot and acting, and its a solid gold keeper all the way.

Both out in excellent DVDRIP format now - go get em.
