If you charge your airfare on a major card like AMEX, Visa, Master Card, don't they give you separate insurance inclusive of limited medical coverage and other losses? Pete

Yes my Lloyds Visa credit card gives medical cover for up to about 30 days only. Interested to know if they have any exclusion clauses so I'll contact them (not by phone of course - getting a phone number for a UK bank these days is like pulling hens' teeth.)
Another problem though is that - maybe like many others - I use a small flight agent who, although very reliable, takes only cash or cheque.

My NatWest Credit Card gives full cover for 31 days for all family members irrespective of whether it was used to purchase the flight/holiday. If I want to stay longer than 31 days, I simply phone them (the broker) and pay a small premium (£10 per week per person) for the additional stay.

My policy document definitely has clauses about FCO advice.

World Nomads does not cover for Thailand if on a government warning, see extract from policy below, every policy I have looked up on the net has this.
"General Exclusions Applicable to all Sections
We will not pay for any of the following claims or losses:
Your claim arises because you did not follow advice in the mass media of a government or other official body’s warning:
•against travel to a particular country or parts of a country;
•of a strike, riot, bad weather, civil commotion or contagious disease;
