I prefer to get my vitamins and minerals in nature's form, not pill form. I haven't seen any of the following in HH.
brewers yeast (yeah, I know about vegamite/maramite)
pignolias (pine nuts)
walnuts
blackstrap molassas
whole grains of any sort
sesame seeds in bulk
flaxseeds (Villa Market has a flaxseed mixture, that if I remember correctly, is ground which means they'll spoil fast)
Also looking for restaurants serving liver. Found some at the italian place next to Sakura Sushi, AIHH as pork liver paste.
And if you know of a store in Bangkok that sells stuff like this and is close to a light rail station that would be helpful.
Seeking brewers yeast and other nutritionally dense foods
Re: Seeking brewers yeast and other nutritionally dense food
I don't think I have noticed anyone with an interest in these sort of products on this forum.

no more dePreston

Having an interest in these items, you will know that Juicing provides concentrated levels of nutrients, while seafood and unrefined sea salt can also provide minerals. 'B' vitamins are made in the gut, so if you have deficiency, you might want to take some probiotics in the form of fermented foods such as Kimchi. You can supplement with brewers yeast but I believe not if you have any candida overgrowth issues. I'm not aware of a supplier here.Homer wrote:I prefer to get my vitamins and minerals in nature's form, not pill form. I haven't seen any of the following in HH.

I've seen whole flax seeds in Villa Market. There is a section with organic nuts and seeds, including walnuts. Sunflower seeds abound here and are relatively easy to obtain (ask any Thai) as are organic oils such as Coconut, Sesame and Rice Bran with linoeic acid, omega 3 and other nutrients. If you want the number of a supplier, pm me.
You can buy bulk Spirulina, a great source of vegetable protein with lots of other benefits or capsules/powder in Golden Place.
Food for thought.

Re: Seeking brewers yeast and other nutritionally dense food
Homer, I think you may be spending too much time in front of your computer or in the pub, because most things on your list are readily available.
Sunflower seeds for example are sold in every shop here, including mom and pop shops, seven eleven and etc. Just look for them were you see chips/crisps. Walnuts are sold at tesco, market ville, and also at the old shopping mall. Whole grains such as brown rice can also be found at tesco, as can things such as sesame seeds. If you find brewers yeast, please let us know..............I'd love to make some "real" ginger beer

Sorry, forgot to mention that you'll find many Thai dishes have liver in them. In fact, it's a bloody nightmare for me because I always have to fish the pieces out because I can't stand liver. You can also buy raw cow, pig and chicken liver at any market where meat is being sold.

Thanks for the replies. I had a brain fart about the walnuts - I had some sitting 3 feet from the keyboard while writing the post.

I need to either read the menu more closely or go to different thai places. I had something unidentified once that I thought might have been liver but couldn't tell because the dish's sauce was overpowering.Takiap wrote:you'll find many Thai dishes have liver in them.
Sunflower seeds are not on the list. I don't like rice much, rarely ate it before coming to asia and therefore don't think of it as a grain. My bad. Don't recall seeing other whole grains, but knowing my bad memory, I'll check again. Sesame seeds are easy to find but haven't seen them in bulk, e.g. 1 kilo sacks. Will let you know if I find the brewers yeast.Takiap wrote:Sunflower seeds for example

Re: Seeking brewers yeast and other nutritionally dense food
Found the sesame seeds at Tesco. I think I need new glasses. Anyway, the bag size is small but so is the price per ounce -- er gram -- so that's OK.
Re: Seeking brewers yeast and other nutritionally dense food
Have you ever tried the brown rice? It's really very different from regular rice, and you actually have to chew it. Probably why the Thais don't like it much. We bought a big bag of brown jasmine rice and I was the only one who thought it was great stuff, hence why I never get sent to buy rice anymore...lol. The texture is similar to that of the wheat you find in wholewheat bread.
Liver you'll often fin in many of the noodle dishes, but you find it in many other Thai meals as well. I really like the beef laab made Isaan style (raw beef) but when you can find it here, they always add liver in. I eventually got my missus to explain to a local vendor down the road that when I buy, he must please leave out the liver, which he now does. Absolutely delicious to have as a snack if you're having a few drinks
