Breathalyzer?

Post by PeteC »

Do the Thai police use these at their roadblocks late night? If so, I wonder what the Thai limit is? I think the USA ranges between .08 and .12 depending upon State. Pete

I have of course never driven while drunk  but when they have stopped me they never did. They seem to be more interested in those without helmets, a nice and easy fine... Last time I was in LOS, this christmas, everyone said the police were starting to take it more seriously than before. I saw nothing of that though.

I heard that the brown guys do have them, but only use them to test the drivers after a traffic accident. Even in Hua Hin they use it.
But hush! It's a community secret!!
I intend to live forever - so far so good.

Oh my, a friend back in Arizona bought one and he hit .08 after just 2 normal size beers one after the other, and he's about 230 pounds. I guess .05 means 2 beers about 30 minutes apart. That's no fun. Best to walk, get a MC taxi, or, sleep at the bar. Pete

That sounds a bit strange, in Sweden we have 0.02 and we can have atleast have a large beer, normally two if you´re not 50 punds, before driving. I got caught with 0.034  and I had had about 8 beers and a .35liter vodka bottle just a few hours before so 0.05 should be more than that.

Maybe my friend was "lubricating" his point in order to make it? I don't know. I've never tested one but would be an interesting experience. Maybe a good "item of interest" for one of the HH bar owners to get one and make it available for conversation sake..LOL. Pete

They're quite serious about it here in Bangkok.
I remember when the Thais couldn't even push their motorbike straight because of the amount they had imbibed before, and the boys in brown wouldn't really bother back then. Even we used to get away with it.
Not so long ago, some of our Thai staff got busted for being over the limit. Even though one of them was pretty connected, he still had to perform community service... :|

Play safe, take a cab and enjoy the evening.

I was down near Phuket a couple of years ago staying with a friend and he told me that the DD regime was pretty tough at that time. Ie 0.5 was the max alcohol and if caught, you'd lose your licence for some time - 6 mths, I think.
If you were caught a second time during this period, bearing in mind you didn't have a licence, it was jail for 3-6 mths.
Community service in BKK seems to pale into insignificance compared to Phuket. Maybe about time the rest of the country caught up with Phuket if the same penalties are still being enforced.
We've got death race 2006 coming up after all - Songkran.
