Chest Freezer/LARGE Coolbox

Post by pharvey »

When in Hua Hin earlier this year celebrating my 40th, we consumed a fair amount of ''jungle juice'' mainly at home...... the problem being, the fridge we have (not particularly cheap or small), was simply not coping. Basically fine for food etc. but not great for a shed load of beer and not helped by having the door continually opened...!

Anyway, I've seen these large red cool boxes at numerous bars and restaurants in HH. I would say they are around 1300mm(L) x 800mm(H) x 600(W) - ideal for keeping beers cool with a few bags of ice. Alternatively, I was thinking of a chest freezer of similar size (turning the temp up so not actually a freezer (?)), but I've not seen anywhere to buy either of these around HH. Any suggestions on where to buy and an estimate of price? I'm hoping to get across for the weekend in a couple of weeks, so would like to sort out then if possible.

Large cool boxes the shop behind the small Big Kiang shop on the corner before the big railway crossing pala u rd. I think around 5k.
Chest freezer 7k+ Makro Cannot be turned into a fridge as the thermostat will be made to reach minimum -18c.
The beer wholesale shop at the Wat Nico junction Nong Korn will loan free cool boxes and supply ice if you buy the booze, Other shops may offer the same service.

The cool boxes come in various sizes - the bars on the beach in front of the Hilton all use them.

They can be bought from a shop near the railway line on the corner near the chaotic junction.........not got a map with me so cannot be more precise but they are chained up outside the shop.

You may be able to 'modify' the chest freezer by replacing or adjusting the preset screw on the thermostat's bi-metal strip or just leave it on max cold and plug in via a simple time switch cycled at say 15 min on 15 min off etc.

And remember as it is designed as a freezer the side panels will freeze as will anything placed against them. also ensure you have a drain opened in the bottom for condensation and defrost
As for adjusting the thermostat it is not a bi metal strip it is gas in small models and electronic in large models.

If you were going to do this I would buy a fridge.

I should have said it is not viable to try to convert a chest freezer into a fridge

pharvey...many bars have the small freezers with sliding glass tops..ask the owners where they got them from..
..these units seem to work at a higher temp. (poss try Big-Kiang's store opp Market Village).
If any of our customers are having a party we chuck the big cool box in the back of the truck, swing in to
the ice-seller about 5 doors down from Kim's Kitchen..50b and its full of ice...sorted.
(if ya box is full of ice its enuf ice to split between 2 boxes once the beer & water is added).

Yes what US mentions are chiller cabinets specifically for beers. Not meant as freezers (although you still need to be careful when adjusting the stat - I have known them freeze bottles.) With glass slide opening lids so you can see what's in there easily.
As with any other fridges/freezers try the shop mentioned on the chaotic railway junction!
Alternatively look out for a second hand Coke fridge.
