The best place to buy prescription meds in the Kingdom

Post by hhfarang »

I take a lot of expensive medications so I wanted to share this with others who may be in the same situation.

I used to buy all my meds from the pharmacy in Hua Hin near the shopping mall as they carried all but one and knowing that I lived here and was coming back every month to spend a few thousand they gave me discounts. Then I discovered that almost any pharmacy in Bangkok was still cheaper than the discounted prices at my Hua Hin pharmacy plus the one's in Bangkok carried one (asthma) medication that is not available in Hua Hin at all (I checked all the pharmacies I could find and both hospitals).

Recently I discovered what I believe is the cheapest place in the Kingdom for meds plus it is a large pharmacy that carries everything. It is a wholesale pharmacy that sells to the other pharmacies but will also sell directly over the counter to off the street customers. It is called South East Pharmacy and is located beside Soi 15 on Sukhumvit road in Bangkok.

Just as an example, my blood pressure medication cost 1700 baht in Hua Hin (for a one month supply), 1500 at another pharmacy on Sukhumvit road in Bangkok and 1050 at South East. The asthma med that is not available at all in Hua Hin cost me 800 baht in most Bangkok pharmacies and is 500 at South East. All of my medications are 30 to 40% cheaper at South East than buying them here or at any other pharmacy I've checked in the Kingdom.

So if you take some expensive meds on a regular basis and visit Bangkok a couple of times a year it will save you a lot of money to stock up while you are there.

As they are such a large concern, supplying smaller pharmacies, do you know if they have a web site?

BB, I couldn't find a site searching in English, maybe they have a Thai one. In my search I did find lots of other recommendations (from other forums and travel sites) for them as the cheapest place to buy meds in Bangkok (and therefore, I believe, Thailand).

Thanks for all that info, it is really helpful. I will keep the address for the future. :)

Re: Sharonbaker online purchases. I would be VERY cautious about buying any medications online. I have read some horror stories in the past about fake drugs sold online. In my mind not worth taking the risk!

For people come to Thailand for visits approx 3 months at a time, remember your GP in the UK will give you 3 months supply prescriptions, so worth remembering. :thumb:

Thanks very much HHF for that info. I have just moved to Soi 7 Sukhumvit, so around the corner for me. I did have 3 month's supply when I came back in Feb but will need to replenish at the end of next month. You have saved me a long and maybe expensive search.

If you take Zocor for high cholesterol, there is a very cheap Thai generic called Bestatin.

I've seen several similar comments to this. How do you find out about the 'Thai generic'? Is it:

- Word of mouth?

- Recommendation by Thai doctor?

- Advice by pharmacist?

- Trial & error?

I'm interested to find out as I'm due to move out in 12 months.

In my experience.. the pharmacy...
When you ask for abc they will often ask if you want abc or the generic.. so the you get details of the generic and price difference.
