Further to the topic on the Saigon river I had been asked to post some photos of Vietnam,
Hoi An, being a heritage site teems with photo opportunities. I have put in photos of the old town and the nearby China Beach which is a good spot, clean surf and thirty miles of sand. Parts near Da Nang were American Army R&R camps hence the '80-90's Vietnam military hospital TV series: China Beach.
Near the beach are lots of backwaters on the Hoi an river with guest houses. I frequently rode the 3 kms on a bycyle into Hoi An.
Many of the old ways are retained in Hoi An

Thanks for the photos Jimbob. I have been to Hoi An and Danang's China Beach twice but I haven't been to the beach near Hoi An. What's it like compared to the China Beach?

Thanks JimBob! Its on my list for this year's trip.

Bamboo Grove:I think the Hoi An end of the beach (or Cua Dai Beach) is much better than the Da Nang end.
Much of the middle of this long beach is being taken up by golf resorts for Japanese etc. Plenty of sand traps. I hope this idyllic area is not over commericalised.
On my list to do, if we go again (probably) is to visit the off shore Cham islands and also get up early to visit the My Son ruins of the Cham empire. Maybe JohnnyK will check these out when he goes there.

Also good places to go in central Vietnam are Hue (old imperial capital) and Dalat (mountainous area). Near Hanoi, don't miss the Halong Bay (that's where my avatar is from) and the water puppets of Hanoi.

Hoi An is also 'tailor town'. Made to measure clothing for ridiculously cheap prices. Go to the central market rather than tailor's shops for best value. You can give them any picture from fashion magazines and they will copy it.
Watch the water. I picked up 'Guardia' there and suffered.
Dalat is where the 'Easy Riders' can be found. I hired one for 6 six days up the Ho Chi Minh trail and central highlands. Cost me $50 altogether. I insisted on driving though and had to keep the guy away from the Karaoke bars (he was wanting to play away from home). Super trip. Be careful of phony Easy Riders. Decent guest house accommodation was around $5 per night.
