Kanchanaburi

Is it possible to get to Kanchanaburi by rail (preferably) or public bus. In Hua Hin for a month so would like to go for a couple of days. No hurry so would be nice to make our own way there.

Also does anyone know of a decent budget priced place and is it better to stay near the town or the river. Stayed one night near the river few years ago thousands of mossies and too far away from town to visit.

yes,the train is awkward because of the times,bus easy,huahin-bangkok south-kanchanaburi.the river area is the best place to stay,many good rooms right along river road. pong penn is the best,very popular,it may not be spelt right but you get the jist.i dont know whats in the town to visit,unless you want a good soapy at the r k hotel.
