No, it's an independent modem through a Net Sim card, looks identical to a normal sim card (usually about 50 baht or thereabouts), just pop it in the stick with some credit and off you go. It's (the EDGE stick) got all the relevant software needed already in it, so it just downloads it all onto any computer/notebook it is pugged into and off you go. No phones involved.

Just for price wise awareness, I bought 100 hours from DTAC for 199 baht last week. Not sure how it compares to AIS as haven't checked for a while, maybe Norseman can tell us as he's using AIS.

AIS is definitely better though for the rural areas.

There is another package, which I use, 250 hours monthly for 500 Baht. It is not published, but at Televiz they told me it exists. I load my SIM-card inside the USB-stick with the AIS 300 Baht cards from 7/11 and it works.

The 480.6 kbps are not reachable, only 240.3, but usually I don't get more than 100 kbps.

Some months ago I bought a USB Vodafone EDGE modem with a AIS simcard installed in the 3rd floor of Market Village.
As Spifire says, the speed isn't much to talk about but you will get on the net with the staggering speed of 460,8 kps.
This post is "airborne" and written on my laptop by the way.
The Vodafone will set you back a couple of thousand Baht, but it's working well even in remote areas of Buriram and Korat and gets the small jobs done nice and easy.

I went to Market Village and purchased an AIS Aircard for 1,790 Baht including 1,800 minutes included - can't argue with that.

There is nothing wrong with the speed - most times it's blink of an eye type stuff, but it did go a little a couple of times. Yes, it is 3G.

Yes, it is a thumb drive - see photo below. It certainly works in Bon Gai, and should work wherever there is 3G coverage.

To help migrant identify the right beastie, I've added a couple of photos above - the picture of the front of the box would normally have the stick showing through the cellophane.

Be careful, I (Charlie Cheap) paid 1.790 Baht. Some of the other stalls were seling the same product for 1,000 Baht more.

It looks like the 2790 baht one was the same modem but with 50 hours, valid for 6 months.

Your deal should've been 1390 baht according to the official site BB!
