Sugar-free soft drinks
Re: Sugar-free soft drinks
In England you can buy a tonic concentrate which you can mix with soda.
Perhaps you can get a friend to bring you some.
Sweeteners are not very pleasant but despite Prtofessor Plum's phobia they are quite safe.
The best solution is to wean yourself off a liking for sweet tastes.

Not sure choosing to eat naturally is a 'phobia' but I understand your need to make yourself feel better. In what way are artificial sweeteners 'not very pleasant'? And what is 'quite' safe? Why not 'absolutely' safe? Or 'guaranteed' safe?darwinian wrote:In England you can buy a tonic concentrate which you can mix with soda.

Concerns about Aspartame prevented it from receiving FDA approval for many years, since it was shown by Searle's own studies to cause brain tumours in animals. Now it's possible that humans are not affected in the same way but it's also possible that they are. Studies contradict each other. Depends on who is paying who, for the research, I suppose.
Russell Blaylock, a neurosurgeon, is one of those conducting research on what he calls 'excitotoxins' or 'neurotoxins'. This interview covers most of the concerns.... http://www.aspartame.com/blaylock.htm And, yes. He's written books on the subject.
If you like your 'theories' in pictures rather than words, then Dees is the man for the job....

Re: Sugar-free soft drinks
Nothing is 100 percnt safe.
It is foolish to say something is totally safe.
I find sweeteners not pleasant mainly because they are sweet.
I do not like sugar either.
Why is a neurosurgeon working on sweeteners?
Such research might be better conducted by a scientist (a toxicologist maybe).
You take a very cynical view of people if you seriously belive that the outcome of a study is often decided by who is paying for it.

What I suggest is that you switch to sparkling water. If you jazz the water up with a load of crushed ice and twist of lime/lemon or both, it makes a delicious drink....with or without the gin! After a while you will get used to it, even may prefer it.Lung Per wrote:Doctor's orders: I have to cut down my intake of sugar. This may have serious consequences for the consumption of my afternoon Gin&Tonic. Tonic Water has a large sugar content.
In the old world, Schweppes sells a sugar-free Tonic Water. I have not been able to find it in HH. Any suggestions? And no; I'd rather not switch to Scotch and Soda.

Gin and Grapefruit Juice
1 ounces Gin
5 ounces Grapefruit Juice
Pour gin into a highball glass two-thirds full of ice. Fill with Grapefruit juice and stir briskly.
(Not for breakfast though!!!)
Remember it is not just added sugar that is the enemy of diabectics, it is also the carbs. If eating bread, avoid white at all costs, same with rice & pasta, shoots the blood sugar up.

Lung Per
These are the guys that manufacture Schweppes in Thailand, but I don't think they do a diet (sugar free) version, but who knows, give them a call and find out.
I'm Type 2 and my doc and diabetic nurse have both told me that one small bottle a day will do no harm, if you cannot get the slimline tonic.
Good luck.

I gave them a call and they do not make sugarfree, nor are the inclined to do so.
I rest my case.

Re: Sugar-free soft drinks
That's a pretty good suggestion, a couple of years ago I found myself in a hotel room with a very good bottle of Vodka that I was given by a Russian whose airplane I helped repair. The only thing I could find late at night to mix with it was sparkling water and it made a very nice drink. What I suggest is that you switch to sparkling water.
As the water has very little flavour, you can really appreciate the taste of what you're drinking.

Personally, I prefer Gin with Schweppes Bitter Lemon but I doubt you can get the slimline version of that either.
