Interesting how someone finds a website, about a place they don't like, a specialized place, and joins a specific forum to say how terrible it is.....

Migrant, if those remarks were addressed to me, I will say now that am not anti Thailand at all In fact I have been to HH a total of 4 times now and on each occasion have had a really great time,

Everythings goes ok,, just fine until you meet MR OFFICIAL MAN sitting behind his/her desk with their "best land of smiles" smile on their faces and that is were the trouble starts.
I have a friend out there from the UK who is a teacher of English who has had no amount of red tape to fight through in order to try and do his job properly,, NOT the sort of thing that should be happening IMO ,after all it is mr official man out there who is always saying yes. yes we need more English teachers here and then when somebody takes the time and trouble to try to take a position up all they are met with is a load of red tape and the famous "smile",
I am quite sure that anyone trying to buy a property there has a lot of probs with the Land Office,, I cant see them being any different than a lot of other depts there
There maybe a lot of expats there who dont mind pushing 4000/5000 Baht "in the right direction" in order to get things done but it certainly would not suit me.
David.

When a dolphin has a bad day he is still smiling.

An important thing to do is let go of our concept of smiling. Quite often misunderstandings begin with our interpretation of the Thai smile. We associate smiling with being happy, being co-operative etc. In our culture it is a positive thing.

The Thai smile can mean anything, but actually at many occassions it means nothing, just a natural pose. A polite gesture.

Best thing is to adapt to Thai culture and smile to everybody and everything all day long, but expect nothing positive from a Thai BECAUSE of the smile.
We are all living in 'the good old days' of the future.

firebird4848,
i'm with you on this one. unfortunately on this forum if you dare to say anything against Thailand some of the members will ridicule you. after 4 trips here you must met the type i'm talking about.
generally English, ex special forces, ex master builders, mega rich. strangely enough these "success stories" are the one's who have work here.???
corruption is wrong but some members of the forum seem happy to pay it.??? the intelligent course is avoid it or pay the minimum amount to get your way.

"the intelligent course is avoid it or pay the minimum amount to get your way."

Which choice is the intelligent one?
I've lost my mind and I am making no effort to find it.

Exacty, it infers paying particular corruption demands can mean different things to different people. And what on earth does 'to get your way' encompass :? If you're truly anti-corruption then there's no bending of the rules when it suits, that's a flawed standpoint. And looking down on others who are more upfront about their actions is rather transparently hypocritical.

Ofcourse they never return here, never shop in the markets, travel on the roads, eat in the family restaurants where the cute kids work, or drink in the bars that are comlicit with the 7 year old flower sellers' handlers? No, they're too busy queing up in Pantip Plaza to get their 300 Baht copy of Office Professional, have you seen the prices of the licensed version

Still all this pales into insignificance compared to the heinous crime of queue jumping at the land office once every 5 years

imho if we accept corruption as a way of life (and paying is accepting regardless of the excuse) than we are also corrupt
I think it may be more appropriate to exchange ideas on how to fight corruption and educate our hosts in ways to avoid it
so that we all can benefit

If you want to fight corruption you need to do so worldwide. The more experienced countries are simply better at hiding it from Joe public.

We could start by campaigning peacefully and sending out missionaries to convert the heathens. We managed to ram christianity down enough other cultures throats after all. Back up the missionaries with some crusaders followed by an inquisition body burning those that refuse to convert at the stake, boiling lead in the veins, if they float they are corrupt, if they drown they are innocent. Condemn everything that does not agree with our own personal model and attack it until it sees the light.

Enough :cuss: We need to address and cut out the evil core of all the problems worldwide. "Human nature" which we have so far failed to do for many years and many reasons. Or am I completely wrong?

a difference between criticising a persons actions and looking down on them. how can i look down upon you. never met you and have no wish to. i criticise your actions and attitude of almost encouraging corruption and ridicule of anyone who dares to disagree with you. still you carry on paying. it is after all your hard earned money.

I don't just pay it to get my way. Seems we have a different attitude towards corruption in this respect.
