Corrosion caused by sea air

Post by PeteC »

Anyone living within a few miles of the sea over there noticing deterioration of chrome, such as motorbike accessories, chrome on custom car wheels, appliances left outdoors, stove tops etc. I'm 2 miles away over this side and unfortunately have begun to notice it on a variety of metal things. I thought I left Hawaii problems behind and we were far enough away from the sea here to avoid this, but I guess not. :( Pete

I think the predominant winds have a lot to do with it also. Ours are from the south or southwest 8-9 months of the year and that's directly off the ocean. Is Hua Hin's generally off the sea as well? Pete

Yes Pete, your diagnosis is spot on. The temperature, and therefore the evaporation rate of the ocean, also comes into it. Not a great deal that you can do about it, apart from moving!

I used to operate a helicopter close and over the sea in the distant past, and I had some chemical spray compound that I applied regularly to try and combat it. Any of the CRC "dewatering" type of sprays, such as WD 40, will help if you can spray it on critical stuff regularly.

In Hawaii I used to use a good silicon car wax on everything, including the microwave oven and ceiling fans. Looks as if I'll have to start that routine again every 6 months. I wonder how the new maid will take the news? :duck: :D Pete
