I think they will be for the Senate elections on 17-18th anyway as I've said before.
What with Chakri Day tomorrow (not compulsory), the election that has been, the Senate elections and by-elections, it's gonna be a great month for the drinkers!!

I've never come across a poitician who can blatently amass a fortune at his own country's detriment.
It's been said SO many times :
1. 2,500 people die in his first "war against drugs" two years ago. Amnesty International called it "extrajudicial killings". Thaksin said " drug dealers on drug dealers". To date, no policeman has been prosecuted.
2. The sale of ShinCorp. Enough said.
3. His outstanding record of helping the "poor" who benefited from water buffaloes, tractors and land etc.
Let's not forget that this was the first time the country folk had been beholden/in debt to anyone. Remember The King's words every year that the Thais should be happy with self sufficiency.
4. We'll forget the dispositions of power that Thakin gave to his family and friends.
Thought that was called nepotism.
5. We'll forget about corruption, vote fixing, "mega deals" that benefitted his family and went wrong etc etc.

I just wonder how many pairs of shoes his wife had, compared to Emelda Marcos.
Thaksin. RIP, I hope. You've done nothing for this country in 5 years.
There. That's my view.
So, who's better off under the old Thaksin regime?

Well said lomu, I think the biggest issue with some foreigners is that they are affiliated with northeastern women whose family have benefited from the TRT regime and so think that all is rosy in the political camp.

While the 30 baht health scheme was a shrewd move by the PM, the poor and uneducated fail to see that all of his other polices have had major detrimental effects on business and GDP of the country as a whole while his personal fortune has escalated exponentially.

Fair comments Kevars.
Thailand dosn't have a constitutionally elected government at the moment. All 500 seats in parliament need to be fillled and 38 of them are not at the moment. I'm not sure that the opposition parties did the right thing by boycotting this time, however the "no votes" were a huge indication of how dissatisfied the country had become with Thaksin's style of politics.
The fact remains that the man and his family are now really open to inspection about how he ran this country.
I personally think that a "deal" will be arrived at. Thaksin and cronies will get to keep all the money they've raped their country for and no public humiliation or legal recourse will be forthcoming against them.
Thais don't like confrontation and this time, at least, there will not be a bloody coup.
Who will take over? Well no-one at her moment. The country dosn't even have a government. Thaksin was crying, The King has spoken (we assume) and there's no way back for "square face".
Do I think Thailand is better off without Thaksin? Yes, 100%. His policies were populist without giving any real, lasting advantage to the people. I could go on forever about this, but the phrase "treat them like mushrooms - keep them in the dark and feed then s***" springs to mind.
Thaksin and his nepotistic family should be brought to book. But I don't think that's going to happen in a million years.
Looking back at your post, Kevars, TRT will win, assuming the opposition runs for office in the 38 constituencies and yes, Thaksin may still wield some power. However, I think that his humiliation world-wide will preclude him from any real influence from now on. Although the western media don't focus on Thailand so much, the foreign correspondents have cut the man down to size and there's just no way back for him.
Take the money and run

Was watching BBC news this morning and they said the man who has stepped into Toxins shoes is a former classmate.

Same same the Army the Police etc etc.

Will things really change or will Toxin be pulling the strings.

Mike.

See above. It's just my opinion though.

Apart from the raping and pillaging of this wonderful land Thaksin has I believe, attempted the most expensive face saving exercise ever performed. The problem that both he and the majority of Thais are facing is that most of the rest of the world are not that nieve. I hate to say it Khun Thaksin but it appears that face is now finished and you need a new one, no doubt your recent appointee. I truly hope for the sake of the sensible Thai population that whoever wins whatever elections, they can bring stability and at least make some inroads into the problems of corruption that abound in this country. Caring ,sharing people I think was a Thaksin idea, no doubt along with amazing Thailand and otop, one tambon one product, I wonder what the product was for his tambon?
