Fair comments Kevars.
Thailand dosn't have a constitutionally elected government at the moment. All 500 seats in parliament need to be fillled and 38 of them are not at the moment. I'm not sure that the opposition parties did the right thing by boycotting this time, however the "no votes" were a huge indication of how dissatisfied the country had become with Thaksin's style of politics.
The fact remains that the man and his family are now really open to inspection about how he ran this country.
I personally think that a "deal" will be arrived at. Thaksin and cronies will get to keep all the money they've raped their country for and no public humiliation or legal recourse will be forthcoming against them.
Thais don't like confrontation and this time, at least, there will not be a bloody coup.
Who will take over? Well no-one at her moment. The country dosn't even have a government. Thaksin was crying, The King has spoken (we assume) and there's no way back for "square face".
Do I think Thailand is better off without Thaksin? Yes, 100%. His policies were populist without giving any real, lasting advantage to the people. I could go on forever about this, but the phrase "treat them like mushrooms - keep them in the dark and feed then s***" springs to mind.
Thaksin and his nepotistic family should be brought to book. But I don't think that's going to happen in a million years.
Looking back at your post, Kevars, TRT will win, assuming the opposition runs for office in the 38 constituencies and yes, Thaksin may still wield some power. However, I think that his humiliation world-wide will preclude him from any real influence from now on. Although the western media don't focus on Thailand so much, the foreign correspondents have cut the man down to size and there's just no way back for him.
Take the money and run
